John quietly got dressed, not to disturb the man next to him in the bed. The room was unfamiliar, as the rooms he stayed in most nights were. The scent of alcohol was strong and the nightstand was full of cigarette buds and needles used for what John could only assume was for heroin.
John pulled up his tight pants, as well as pulling down the shirt he hated with a passion. He didn't like most of the clothes in his closet but he knew that sex sells and he needed money. Dressing in the clothes he would rather burn was part of the job so he did it. John grabbed the cash from the table, quietly walking out of the room, then the apartment.
It was brisk outside, still being dark out. It was that time of the day you could say it was late night or early morning. John preferred to leave around that time, not wanting young children to see him walking around like this. He always felt disgusted with himself and would rather not have children seeing him and following his footsteps one day. He hated what he had become but he knew he couldn't help it. He had made a couple bad decisions and he ended up broken and alone. The only way he found to cope was sex. So John prostituted himself.
His prostitution was how he met his roommate and best friend, Lafayette. It was a very drunken hook up and John ended up staying later than normal. The two instantly clicked and a friendship came.
Lafayette had a well paying job. He worked in an office building with government officials. He actually went to college and made something of himself. John knew Lafayette didn't need to help paying rent. He just let John think that so he would have a place to stay. It made him upset but he was grateful for it, nevertheless.
John pretended to be big and tough though really, on the inside, he was one of the most generous and caring people you could meet. He just learned to hide his vulnerability. He had learned to keep his feelings quiet at a young age and never showed them, not even to Lafayette. If he ever felt sad, he'd take a shower and cry while in there. He took a lot of showers.
John continued his walk home, getting cat called by a couple of people, just rolling his eyes. It happened often and at this point, John felt as though he should be used to it since it was part of the job. That didn't mean he didn't hate it though.
He put a cigarette in his mouth, lighting it as he walked. He knew the dangers of nicotine but in all honesty, John didn't care. Anytime an ad for nicotine prevention came on before a YouTube video, he would skip it. In school, during the presentations, he would zone out. He didn't care if this killed him. It was honestly probably one of the more healthy habits John had, which said a lot.
Once John made it to his and Lafayette's apartment, he was sure to be quiet. He watched every step, sure not to trip on the piles of clothes and empty chip bags in their living room. He made it to his room, opening his door as quietly as he could, though it was still noisy since it was already creaky.
John quickly changed out of his outfit. He changed into sweats and a shirt, strongly preferring it over the tight clothes he had on before. He made his way to the living room, sitting on the couch with a blanket and scrolling on his phone. He lost track of the time as he did this, though he was getting more and more tired as time went by. That was until Lafayette scared him so much he fell off the couch.
"Marquis, you can't do that!" John glared, getting back on the couch. Marquis was Lafayette's first name. There were so many names to call him, as his middle name was a mile long, but he just went as Lafayette. John called him Marquis and he was the only one allowed to.
