Chapter 12. The strange thing
Tuesday morning was really fun. The morning started fairly good and I didn’t see Simon or any of his goons. That was a relief itself. Then there was History class and Ms. Adam called me and talked with me about Mr. Russell.
She was a great teacher. She really cared for her students and she respected me for what I was.
“Don’t you dare back down Zara! You’re a good girl and a strong girl. You know, it’s your right. You can’t give it up for anyone.”
“I know Ms. Adam; it’s really funny that he suddenly talks about dress code, when in honesty I haven’t heard about said codes before. I won’t back down, but sometimes it gets really tiring, Ms. Adam. What can I do? I, after all, am, just a mere girl, who is struggling along her path of life. I can fight, but not for long; at least not if Allah wished for me to go on.” I stated sincerely. She nodded her head.
“You’re right; but if you need any help, I will be with you. Don’t hesitate to ask me any favor. I will certainly do it for you, for any of my students.” I nodded with a happy smile. I was glad there were teachers like Ms. Adam around the school, teachers who would offer support without asking.
World was not completely evil. It still had some nice people around and that, I suppose, was the reason for rain. Or we would have simply ceased to exist long ago.
When I walked out of the room, I was greeted by Jake Brown. He stared at the wall as he talked.
“Zara, Yusuf said about Mr. Russell. I am so glad you said what you said. He deserved it.”
That put a small smile in my lips. I nodded before I replied, albeit hesitatingly.
“I sounded like a brat back there, but I just don’t care anymore. They can’t give me trouble just because I am Muslim.” I replied in a stern voice, as I let my eyes fell to the floor. Staring too long at his face wasn’t comfortable for me.
“No, you don’t deserve it just.” He sounded sincere. I met his eyes and was stunned to see the sincerity in them. He truly cared, I didn’t know what the reason was, but I was happy somehow. It was a pleasant surprise to know that there were people by my side in this war I was going to fight with Mr. Russell and that gave me strange hope and a feeling that I could face the whole world, head on!
I sounded too optimistic, but it really felt like that I could win this with the help of these people.
When I started to pass, Julian crossed my path and stood there with his eyes above my head. I waited patiently for what he was going to say, but before he opened his mouth, I heard Jake whispered darkly at Julian.
“Back off, Julian. She didn’t want to talk, but my fist needed a talk right now.”
Was he threatening Julian, now? That was really scary. I snapped my eyes towards him to see him crossing his arms across his chest, his stance wide and ready to pounce.
“What, Jake? Are you now a warrior?” Julian asked crossly before he smiled widely.
“If you don’t mind, I want to talk to Zara and I know she doesn’t want you to protect her. Man, she can do it all on her own. Oh and FYI, Zara and I are in better terms, now.”
That put a scowl on Jake’s face. His eyes darkened and his jaw tightened as he pushed his fisted palm inside his pocket. I wondered what was with his mood swings. He really looked dangerous right now and I didn’t want Julian to get hurt, because of some misunderstanding. After that day we met and talked about Islam, he was no more a problem. He said sorry and he said he would respect me, for what I was.
