Amelia's POV
I wasn't too shocked about the cast list, to be honest. I was humbly expecting the role of Veronica, though I'd never admit it. And everybody knew how the Heathers were going to be casted the second Eva, Space, and Clara auditioned, even if they refused to admit it to themselves.
The only parts that had surprised me were JD and Ms. Flemming. I hadn't known Clara's brother was a good actor, (Jesus, was their family good at everything?) but now it was causing problems. Eva was really jealous, though I knew she wouldn't admit it. And I was a little mad, too. Dating a JD as Veronica was pretty much a life goal for me, and it obviously wouldn't work out.
Kara's casting did surprise me, though the more I think about it, the more I love it. Kara had a unique voice, not a bad one, but one that would be shoved into ensembles just for a high note and vibrato. I had kind of assumed Kara would get ensemble, though I would never say it, but now that she was Flemming I had to admit it was a perfect choice.
Clara, Kara, and I seemed to be the only ones who were satisfied with their roles, at least on the girls side of the mess hall. Eva and Space were both gloomily looking into the distance, and I had seen them acting coldly towards one another, which I didn't understand. It's not like either of them had had a say it what part they wanted. Plus, I didn't understand being upset over a lead role; it seemed a little bratty to me.
In addition to Eva and Space, all of Chloe's cabin seemed upset about their roles, besides Chloe, which was such a stark contrast to the beginning of the summer that I almost laughed. I again didn't understand their disappointment. Well, I understood Sky's and Kailie's, they had only gotten ensemble. But Ava had gotten one of the leads, shouldn't she be happy? But instead she seemed saddest of all. Of course my sister can't be happy about anything ever. Still, I would try to talk to her about it after dinner. I wasn't a completely terrible sister.
I noticed Clara trying to start a conversation at the table, and Kara jumping in and continuing. Eva and Space both made half-assed attempts to join in.
Their conversation came to a stop when the boy Clara had been talking to earlier came up behind her. Thank God, that conversation had been awkward as hell.
"Congrats, Chandler," he said, smiling genuinely, "I knew you would get it."
"And congrats to you too, Mr. Kurt Kelly. That was some 'musical theatre geek that can't sing' bullshit," Clara replied, matching his smile. I wasn't really sure what that meant, but Luke seemed to, as he broke out into a laugh.
Before he could say something else, a strong hand was placed on his should.
"I'm sure you can discuss the play later tonight, but for now return to your table, Luke. The announcements will begin shortly." The camp director, Mr. Brightly, said sternly. Mr. Brightly was six feet of pure strictness, the exact opposite of what you would think a camp director At first the guy had scared me, but Eva, Clara, and Space had told me so many funny stories about him, now it took all I had not to laugh when I saw him.
"Oh, sorry, sir. Um, bye," Luke said to our table as he walked away. We all giggled at his awkwardness.
"So, Clara, was that the boy Kara was telling us about?" Eva teased, seeming to be back to her old self at the moment.
"Oh look, announcements are starting, guess we can't talk," Clara replied, ignoring the question. I laughed at her obvious avoidance of the question, before realizing announcements actually were starting. Mr. Brightly had promised a special announcements for the older kids tonight, and, though it had been overshadowed by the cast list, there was some anticipation for the announcement as well.
