Alex glances at me as we ride in his car on our way to Hope’s house. His hand is resting on my thigh as he keeps his eyes on the road. We sit in comfortable silence, neither of us having anything to say. Just Happy. Alex pauses at a red light, looking over at me. “It’s so quiet” He says, breaking the silence. I roll my eyes, pointing at the light that has turned green.
“That’s because I was enjoying the moment” I reply, studying Alex’s features. “Did you know your jaw bone is really defined?” I tell him, poking him right where his jaw meets his neck. He chuckles, glancing over at me. It’s funny, one second, everything is okay and you would never expect anything to happen. But that glance made by Alex turned everything upside down. “ALEX!” I shout, just as a car hits us.
The world goes still for a moment, as our car goes flying. It swerves off the side of the road, flipping over. When everything stops moving in the car, I open my eyes. The windshield is shattered, jagged points of glass sticking up everywhere. I feel something dripping down my face, and I see a patch of blood on my right leg. I look over at Alex, who is slumped forward. He isn’t moving, so I try to reach for him but I get stopped short. My left leg is trapped under a piece of metal from the car.
“Alex?” I ask, willing him to wake up. I see blood running from his head and his left arm, and I begin to get worried. “Alex!”

I sit next to Alex’s hospital bed, holding his hand. It’s been a week since the accident, and he hasn’t woken up. A nurse with a smile painted on her face walks in, her blonde curls bouncing as she walks. “How’s our perfect patient today?”
“Just dandy,” I reply “He woke up, did some yoga, had a really fattening burrito, then fell back into unconsciousness” I say, sarcasm oozing out of me. The smile on the nurses face doesn’t falter, and she checks his blood pressure and pulse. Just as the nurse is leaving, Onyx walks in.
“Hey” He smiles weakly at me, and I wave. “Anything new?” He asks, and I shake my head.
“Still asleep” I brush Alex’s hair away from his face, avoiding the bandage on his head. I hit my head pretty hard on the dashboard, but Alex supposedly hit his even harder against his steering wheel. I glance back at Onyx, sadness consuming me. “What if he doesn’t wake up?” I ask, and Onyx shakes his head.
“It’s okay. He’ll wake up eventually, don’t worry-” Onyx stops mid-sentence, staring at Alex. I look at him, gasping when his brown eyes stare back at me.
“Get a nurse!” I shout, staring at Alex. “You’re Okay! Oh thank god I was so worried. We got hit by a drunk driver but don’t worry, everything is fine… except your car” I say, and Alex’s brows knit together. “Onyx is getting a nurse” I smile, and Alex makes a face.
“Who’s Onyx?” He asks, just as a nurse walks in.
“It’s perfectly normal for him to have memory problems. The memories should come back eventually. Alex? Do you remember Amethyst?” The nurse gestures toward me. Alex stares at me for a moment, before shaking his head. I stare at Alex in shock, not wanting to believe it.
“I’m sorry, I don’t remember her…”.
