Rich agreed to walk into school separately so that people wouldn't know about last night. He went first, and I went after about thirty seconds. I walked up to my friend group, and was relieved to see Sidney hanging out just like normal. Maximillian still looked like he was in a daze.
"Hey guys!" I chirped. "How's it--"
"George! Oh my God, I'm so sorry. I was looking all over for you at the party and I didn't know where you were, I had to leave and... is that a hickey?"
"It's okay, Sid. I get it. You were drinking, and I just needed to get some air."
"Wait." I blinked in surprise, and Maximillian walked up to Sidney. He looked angry, not broken up. "Sidney Elijah Alder, you were drinking? And you dragged George to a party and lost him there?"
"Max, I can explain," he replied calmly.
"Please, give me an explanation."
"I was sad, I thought it would help me feel better, and honestly, it did until I lost George. Then I started to freak out, and I wanted to get back to normal, and I had to leave early and I couldn't find him."
Maximillian was silent for a moment, then gave Sidney a sad expression. "That makes a difference, then," he said. I could tell he had a lump in his throat.
"We should go talk," Sidney told us, excusing the two of them for a moment. Once they left, all eyes were on me.
"Damn, I can't believe you went to that party," Bex exclaimed. "You never seemed like the type to go out late."
"I'm not, usually."
"You know, you seem pretty chipper today," James observed. "Did you have fun last night or something?"
"I mean, he probably had fun getting that hickey."
"Bex!" I turned pink with embarrassment. I tried my hardest not to smile, but thinking about Rich made it impossible. "Sorry. Can we forget the hickey for a while?"
"What is a hickey?" Jillian asked. James burst out laughing. Welp, I guess that was a big fat no. Lovely.
"Well," Bex began, obviously trying not to laugh. "When a person gets kissed a lot by another person, they get a hickey."
Jillian's mouth was gaping open. "George, you were kissed?"
"Don't act so surprised," I joked, still pink. I made the executive decision to pretend I was getting a phone call and hastily ran to my locker to get away from my friends. I loved them, but they could be a handful sometimes.
As I reached for my science binder, I saw Rich approaching my locker. I smiled, trying not to show how much I wanted to kiss him at that moment. He noticed.
"Hey, George," he grinned. "How's it going?"
"You were wrong this morning," I replied, raising my eyebrows. "Every single one of my friends noticed my neck."
"Oh, that. My bad." He scratched his head, unintentionally flexing his deltoids under his flannel shirt. I felt my cheeks get hot. "Anyways, now that you actually like me, I wanna have a date with you."
"Do you now?" I grinned.
"I do." He put his hand on my shoulder, his tone becoming more serious. "I've been waiting for way too long to get the courage to ask you, and now that you like me, I'm finally ready."
"You're so sweet," I gushed. "Where do you suggest we go?"
"We don't need to go anywhere." I raised an eyebrow. "I think we should do a movie night, just us. I can make you dinner, and I have Netflix on the TV in my room."
