New York felt so strange and distant, like she had leapt into a new world altogether. Had it been just hours ago that she had been with her friends? It felt like ages. Alyssa didn't know if she could ever get used to this feeling.
Karson dragged her towards a black Limo which stood at the very end of an empty VIP parking lot. Suddenly, Alyssa's heart was thumping in her chest. She stopped for a moment, forcing a very moody Karson to step back.
Karson held her hand, turning her around to make her face him. His frown had ebbed just a little. The jet lag and air-sickness had put him in a bad mood, but seeing Alyssa, he knew she must be feeling worse.
"I don't even know anything about her," Alyssa mumbled, looking down at her feet.
"Alyssa," Karson sighed, biting his lips. "Believe it or not, she's a nice person. And she's your mother. She would never hate you."
Alyssa shook her head. "You don't understand."
"Oh really?" Karson challenged, raising his eyebrows. "You seem to have forgotten that we were born from the same progesterone."
Alyssa frowned at the smug look on his face. "Whatever, let's go!'
After all, if she never tried, she wouldn't know. She had to talk to Fiona first before deciding whether she'd made the right decision or not.
Karson handed their luggage to their chaffeur, who had jogged up halfway to meet them. Karson then placed a hand on Alyssa's shoulder. "Just be yourself," saying this, he opened the back door for her.
And immediately, Alyssa was engulfed in a bear hug that almost chocked her, not to mention the excess fur and velvet that smashed into her. Within seconds, Alyssa was pulled inside the car.
With her mouth wide open, she started at the posh and perfect woman who sat beside her, with blond hair prettily curled and her face caked with flawless makeup, smiling at Alyssa.
"Alyssa darling, I missed you so much," she said, her eyes shining. "My dear daughter... You look so grown-up. You look a lot like Ander, but your pretty, unlike him. And man, I'm glad you got my lovely eyes instead."
"Mom," Karson groaned from the front seat. "Your praising yourself."
"And what is wrong with that, Kay-kay?" Fiona sniffed at her son, before turning back to Alyssa. "You can't believe how happy I am though, my child. I love you, Alyssa. I always have. I had to suffice with stalking you on Instagram because Ander wouldn't cooperate. I hope you will be happy here, Alyssa. I can't wait to get to know you better!" she squealed excitedly.
"See, Alyssa?" Karson joked, catching her gaze as he turned. "I told you you didn't have to worry. She would talk enough for all three of us."
"Kay-kay!" Fiona shouted, smacking him in the face with her glittering white purse. "Don't you listen to your brother, Alyssa. He knows nothing. Anyway, how has your life been?"
Alyssa had expected some awkwardness, but she was surprised to feel none. Fiona Magellan easily made her comfortable, as if she wasn't a celebrity, or her long lost mother at all!
"Hm, it was okay. I miss Winchester, though."
Fiona places a hand on her shoulder. "I know it's hard, sweetheart. But I promise to try my best to make you love New York, too. This is your home now. But first, tell me something about yourself - like your favourite activities, for example."
"Mm," Alyssa thought for a moment about what she should say, before deciding to just tell about the two prominent ones. "I like singing and driving."
Fiona's smile faltered for a second, before she adopted a dramatic pout. "You like driving but not painting?"
"Um," Alyssa giggled, feeling just a little bit nervous. "Sorry, but no."
"Oh well, what about appreciation?" Fiona asked, sounding desperate to find at least some artsy gene in her daughter.
"I do appreciate it, don't worry," Alyssa said, smiling at Fiona's childishly fun nature. She liked the woman already, but the notion of her being Alyssa's mother still sounded as unreal as it sounded surreal.
"Thank goodness!" Fiona squealed, pressing her hands together. "Next question : What do you want to be in the future?"
"Well, I'll give singing a shot first. And as of now, I don't have any back-up plan." Alyssa shrugged, suddenly remembering the warm and just a little suggest voice from yester-night, singing to her.
She blinked. She mustn't think of him now!
"That is great! I have a few connections in the entertainment industry. You could meet them, but we shall do that later. For now, I want you to have a relaxed, happy life before you get down to work. Does does that sound?" Fiona asked, raising a perfectly lined eyebrow.
"Perfect," Alyssa said, grateful and happy.
After a few more minutes of talking, Fiona finally exclaimed, "Oh, we're home! Finally! Just wait till you meet Dave, he's been asking about you, too."
She gave Alyssa a glittering smile, just as the car stopped in front of a multi-storied building, that stood so tall in the night sky that Alyssa couldn't help gaping.
Karson came up from behind her, thumping her shoulders lightly. "Ready for it?"
Alyssa looked at Fiona, who was talking animatedly to the chaffeur. She turned back to Karson and asked him, "Who's Dave?"
For the first time since they were in New York, Karson looked uncomfortable. "Eh, he's my father - Dave Besson. He and mom are married. I'm so sorry, Alyssa, I didn't tell you before. I thought that might make you uncomfortable."
Alyssa frowned, looking down at her feet. "It's okay, Karson. She moved on - that's good, or you wouldn't have been here today. I'm just scared if he would accept me."
"To say the truth," Karson replied, taking a deep breath. "That's exactly what I was worried about."
