The drive up to camp is always dull, but today it seems different. Rain patters against my windshield as I pull into the gravel parking lot. I sit in my car for a moment, gathering the will power to start this undoubtedly exhausting week.

Slowly, I open my car door and step into the muggy morning air. I walk around to the boot, pop it open, and take out my bags.

I trudge down to the activity centre, trying my hardest not to look miserable.

"What's your name, sir?" a woman in a dark orange shirt says, brandishing a clipboard at me.

"Uh... Jac Evans, Ma'am. I'm here to cabin lead," I say, caught off guard by her sudden appearance.

She scribbles on her clipboard for a moment before looking up at me and examining me with curious brown eyes.

"You sure you're ready for this?" she asks.

"Uh, sure, I guess."

"Great! I'll get someone to show you up to your cabin. I'm Lane, by the way, the director this week," she adds before hurrying away.

I'm left in the spitting rain, feeling very confused. Last year wasn't like this.

A young woman with pink/lilac hair and dark brown eyes comes jogging into view. She smiles widely as she approaches.

"Hiya there! I'm Pearla, I work here and I will also be a fellow cabin leader this week!"

I nod at her in greeting.

"Let's see, Jac Evans you're in... Cabin 2A! Okay, do you need help with any bags or can you manage?" she says, gesturing with her clipboard.

"I got it," I mumble.

"Good, let's go!"

She half jogs her way up the slight incline to the cabins. Jesus, I forgot how much energy it requires to work at this camp.

By the time Overly-happy-Pearla leaves me to "Get the cabin ready for all the happy campers!" I've already been at the camp for an hour. I sit down on the centre bed, already worn out. I close my eyes and take a deep breath through my nose.

I am at camp Tarshis, and I'm here to make these kids' week amazing. There is no time for personal issues. Leave them be, they can wait. I open my eyes and rub my face with the back of my hands. The campers haven't even arrived yet and I'm already exhausted.

I'm off to a great start.
