"Stay at 45," Red said while looking behind him as he saw hundreds of the creatures running at maybe 40 miles per hour. "We don't wanna lose them."
Blood dripped from the mouths and torsos of the creatures. About a dozen of the creatures that were running behind us, some of them kept bumping into the back of the car. The force and momentum built by them shook the car slightly every time they touched the car. Even with the windows up, it was difficult to ignore the aggressive running noises that their feet made. It felt like thousands of horses gearing up for a race, or a battle. We had only stopped a couple of times for them to catch up.
"We have only stopped a couple of times for them to catch up," Red spoke, interrupting my thoughts. "Not unlimited stamina... but still great."
The monsters did not affect anyone emotionally, except for Parkinson. His hands were gripped on a small piece of paper. I tried to peek at the small paper but could only figure out that it was a picture of a family. Lydia gripped onto her weapon as she tried to remain confident. Red and Jack were on the lookout, just in case the creatures were gaining more momentum or slowing down. I wondered how far away we were but my introvertive side took over and I remained speechless.
"How far away are we?" Red asked.
"Maybe 10 to 15 more minutes away," James answered.
"Everyone get ready," Red ordered.
The creatures looked more vicious than ever. I did notice however that there were many who just seemed to drop to the ground. Parkinson explained that since the disease is causing our brains to have holes in them, it may have degenerated to such critical levels that it affected most of their vital bodily systems. His theory was that if we just laid low and gave it plenty of time, they would eventually die out. It would take a year or two from the looks of it, but it will happen. Some had faster effects than others so it all seemed to be contingent on the individual, but this made sense. The creatures looked very disgusting and pale.
"Very pale and disgusting, aren't they?" Red asked sarcastically.
I gave him a look and then turned back around to face the monsters. They still terrified me and I knew that I did not want to have anything to do with this showdown, but it was something that must be done.
James pressed on the brake really hard, stopping the car for only a quick second. Loud thumping noises could be heard at the back of the car. Some of the creatures flew on the rear window, causing severe cracks. Some of the creatures' hands got stuck on the fenders at the back and as they pulled them out, their hands were cut off. The fenders got pulled off the vehicle as their heads bounced on the surface of the trunk. I turned to James who began laughing hysterically for a moment until he pressed really hard on the gas pedal.
"Might as well have a final moment of fun," James howled as he held up a cigar with his left hand and tried to light a match with his right. He was successful.
Red had the same look of confusion on his face as me. Red then proceeded to turn his head back again to keep a lookout. The vehicle bounced hard over the gravelly pathways leading to the laboratory.
"That's the front gate," Red said while looking far out into the distance.
"I know," James replied.
"I thought we were going from the back of the campus," Red said while holding on to his seatbelt.
I looked to the left and the right sides of the car and noticed the various amounts of dirt rise up, filled with the creatures running with us now. James was still driving at 45 miles per hour but I guess him stopping entirely helped to give the creatures an adrenaline rush.
