when johnny took his gal out for a date at night, he was always sure to walk her back home. her dad worked long, late shifts while her mom had passed when she was younger, and no one would know until morning if she never arrived to her house.

usually, these walks were comfortably silent. the pair didn't have to speak to say anything, they understood each other in that kinda way. they would take in how great the date was and savor the moment, under the stars.

tonight, however, the girl was thinking of the night she and johnny admitted their feelings for each other at the drive in and realizing how much lousier her life would've been if it had gone differently.

"you know," she started, looking at the boy she walked next to, "sometimes i wonder what could've happened if we didn't go to the movies together that night you stood up to dal"

johnny thought about it and said simply, "i never woulda had the guts to tell you how i feel and i wouldn't 'a ever told dal to lay off 'a that red-headed girl." he smiled at her and squeezed her hand.

"'sides, what's it matter? we're together now 'n i wouldn't have it any other way"

she felt her face get hot and smiled, "i wouldn't either, i didn't mean it in a bad way." taking a pause, she let out a breath.

"and i think that you woulda told dal to lay off. i mean, he was really botherin' you with the way he was talking to her. you got more guts than you think, johnny cade."

squeezing his hand back, she saw him smiling at her from the corner of her eye. as the couple arrived at her driveway, he walked her to her front porch and grabbed her hands.

"how's this for guts?"

he placed a kiss on her lips and smiled again, only to be met with her smiling back.

"perfect. i had an amazing night with you, johnnycake. thanks for taking me out."

"i know it wasn't much, but i'm saving up for a great date with you. just you wait."

"tonight was lovely."

she planted a kiss on his cheek as a thank you.

"are you sure you'll be able to get home safe? do you need anything before you go? do you have your switch?"

he chuckled at her worrying and reassured her,
"i'll be fine, darlin'. i always got my switch."

she simply looked up to the moon at this. she was concerned about him walking at this time of night.

he looked at her and smiled,
"whada' ya say we go to that dance next weekend. the homecoming one? i could borrow a tux or something from one a' the guys and take you to get a dress. how's that sound?"

"it sounds perfect, johnny. thank you."

"great. hey, uh, i gotta go, but maybe i'll see ya tomorrow. 'night. sleep well."

"of course. goodnight, johnny"

with that, johnny flashed her a final smile, turned off the porch, and began his trek to the lot. it was late, and his parents wouldn't be too happy if he came home and woke them up with the opening of their rusty screen door at this time of night.

as she watched him from her porch, she felt glad that johnny took his shot on her. he was a great guy, and she felt as though they belonged together.

someday, she thought, we'll get married in a town far from here.
