The drive was slow, he was defiantly taking his time. I watched out the window, which was becoming more trees and hills.
We were slipping away into the forest.
He pulled onto a long dirt road, trees on either side, making it so sunlight sprinkled through the leaves.
"Do you do any sports?" He asked, breaking the silence.
"Track," was all I could manage to say.
"Ah, personally I'm not much of a runner, or any sports really," he said.
"Oh yea?" I replied.
"Why do you do it?" He asked.
"Do what?"
"Run. Track."
"I run for the applause, the rush of adrenaline, and the control I have." I said.
He chuckled.
"Whats so funny?" I asked.
He began to sing,"I live for the applause, applause, I live for the applause, applause."
"Nice Lady Gaga impression," I said laughing.
He looked at me smiling,"I try."
I looked out the window again. The forest growing thicker and thicker. I imagined myself running through the trees, the moist ground under my feet. Running my hands over the rough bark.
"You sure are quiet," he said.
"Well what am I supposed to say? Your not too talkative yourself," I replied.
"Say anything you want, I'm listening."
"That's a first."
"What?" He asked.
"Listening. Someone listening. Someone listening to me," I said plainly, "therefore I don't know what to say because I don't get listened to that often."
"Why won't they listen?"
"They trick you."
"What do you mean?"
"I'll be taking, and they stand there acting like they listen. It's like talking to a brick wall. I sometimes think I'm only liked because of my athletic ability, my friends, just not me."
"What do you mean 'your friends'?" He asked.
It was different having him interested in my problems, my life, me. Nobody ever really asked. It was like I was placed in a void but within reach to stay with the crowd.
"Like the people I hang out with. Tyler, Dianne. I feel like I'm only liked because I'm with them. I don't know if I will be anymore anyways."
His lips were pressed together in a fine line, face stern, as if he were mad at the people who were doing this to me.
"I wouldnnn--wont do that." He said looking at me with sad eyes. He almost looked like he wanted to cry. I don't know why.
"What are we buddies now?"
He shrugged his shoulders dramatically,"maaaayyybbbee."
I smiled and stared out the window, he had pulled onto a dirt road. Narrow and worn down. Not big enough for two cars to meet.
5 minutes later he parked the car and we were staring out towards a lake, twinkling from the sun roaring down on it.
Beautiful...
Was all I could manage to think. But then A another thought crossed my mind.
Why did he bring me here? What was so speacial about me??I went to get out of the car, barley pulling the door handle and he shot up.
"AH!" He sqwaked, making me laugh.
"WHAT!" I said.
He smiled and got out of the car, pointing at me telling me to sit, then put one hand on his stomach and the other behind his back and began walking around to my side of the car. Then he reached my door and he reached out with one hand, opening the door the putting his other out. I placed my hand on top of his, like I had when I got in, stepped out. Then, pretending I had a dress on, curtsey in front of him and he bowed his head. I let go of his hand and he shut the door behind me.
We then walked over to a tree by the water and sat down. We talked about everything. I told him about Tyler and Dianne, track, soccer, school, everything. He was probably the first person I can remember opening up to. Open. Free.
"Can I tell you something?" I asked plucking at the grass.
"Course."
I looked up into his eyes, those deep brown eyes, getting lost and not wanting to be found.
"We just met, but I feel like I've known you forever." My words were shaky, nervous, but strong.
We hadn't looked away from eachother. My eyes were beginning to water, swim away. I wanted to look away but his eyes pleaded me to stay.
"I know," was all he said.
I stood up, "let's walk around."
He smiled,"okay."
It was a gigantic lake. Took us roughly an hour to walk 3\4 of it.
It was well passed lunch, I knew because my stomach was beginning to growl, begging me for food. I tried to hide it but I couldn't handle it anymore.
"I'm gonna die."
"Wh--..what? What do you mean?" He asked, looking concerned.
"Food.. I need it."
"Ohhh," he smiled, "race you to the car."
"Your on! Ready..se--- Hey!!!" I screamed as he shot forward.
I sprang forward, pumping my legs and arms. I reached out grabbing his arm and pulled him back.
The car was 100 meters away.
I'm gonna beat a boy!! I squealed in my mind.
Before I knew what was happening he had his hand on my arm and was wrapping his arms around my waist and falling to the ground. We were both laughing and I began to crawl towards the car, not having the power to get up from my laughing so hard.
"Dang, you don't give up!" He shouted running after me and sprinting to the car before I had the power to stand up.
Once I saw him at the car, I collapsed on my back smiling up at the trees above me.
I'd never been so happy in my life.
Free, different, open... Me...
