It was an early morning In New York City, lower Manhattan. Three Newsies slept on the roof. One woke from their sleep and dressed. It was Crutchie.
"Where ya goin'? What are you..?" Jack said standing up
"The bell ain't rung yet, go back to sleep" Daisy mumbled, still curled up in as if Jack were still beside her.
" I wanna beat the other fellas to the streets. I don't want anyone to see that I aint, uh... been walkin' so good." Crutchie says as Daisy stands up and brushes herself off.
"Oh quit gripin'. You know how many guys fake a limp for sympathy?" Jack says
"That bum leg of yours is a goldmine!" Daisy says reassuringly.
"Someone gets the idea I can't make it on my own, they'll lock me up in the refuge for good. Be a pal, guys, help me down" he says and he falls
"You wanna bust your other leg too?" Daisy exclaims pulling him back up.
"No... I wanna go down" he replies
"You'll be down there soon enough. Take a moment drink in my penthouse. High above the stinkin' streets of New York." Jack says
"You're crazy." Daisy laughs and smiles
"Why, cause I like a breath of fresh air? Cause I like seein' the sky and the stars." Jack leans onto the rail.
"Yeah, you're seein' stars alright" Daisy says wrapping her arms around his and etting her head on his shoulder.
"Them streets down there, they sucked the life right outta my old man. Years a' rotten jobs. stomped on by bosses, and when they found him broken, they tossed him to the curb, just like yesterday's paper, well they ain't doin that to me!" Jack yelled at the streets
"But everyone wants to come here." Crutchie says
"New York's fine, for those who got a big strong door to lock it up. But i tell you both. There's a whole 'nother way out there. So you keep your small life in the big city. Give me a big life, In a small town." Jack says
"They say folks is dyin to get here. Me I'm dyin to get away, to a little town out west thats spankin new. And while I aint ever been there, I can see it clear as day. If you want , I bet'cha you could see it too." he sings as Crutchie walks towards them.
"Close your eyes... Come with me, where its clean and green and pretty" he continues singing as he puts his arms around the two.
"and they went and made a city outta clay. Why, the moment ya get there, Folks'll walk right up and say, Welcome home, son, Welcome home to Santa Fe! Plantin Crops" he sings
"Splittin Rails." Daisy sings, making it seem like she wants to go.
" Swappin tales around the fire." Jack sings with a smile.
"'Cept for Sunday when you lie around all day." Daisy sings again.
"Soon your friends are more like family and theys beggin you to stay aint that neat? Livin sweet in Santa Fe."
"You got folks there?" Crutchie asks
"I got no folks nowhere. You?" Jack states
"Nah, I don't need folks. I got friends" Crutchie says looking around at them.
"Hey. how about you two come with me? No one cares about no gimp eg in Santa Fe! You just hop a palomino! You'll ride in style!" Jack says pretending to ride a horse making Daisy facepalm.
"Yeah picture Me, ridin' in style." Crutchie says
"Hey, I bet a few months of clean air, you can toss that crutch for good!" Daisy says
"Santa Fe, you can bet. We wont let them bastards beat us. We wont beg no one to treat us fair and square. Theres a life thats worth the livin, and Im gonna do my share." They all sing.
"Work the land" Jack sings
"Chase the sun" Daisy sings
"Swim the whole Rio Grande just for fun!" they sing.
"Watch me stand! Watch me run.." Crutchie sings, then gets stone faced.
"Hey, hey... Dont you know that we's a family?" Jack says
"Would Jack let you down? No way!" Daisy says placing a hand on Crutchies shoulder.
"Just hold on, kid, till that train makes Santa Fe." Jack belts. The bell rings.
"Time for dreaming's done." Jack yells down at the boys
"Hey! Specs, Racer, Henry, Albert, Elmer, get a move on!" Daisy yells while getting dresses.
"Them papes don't sell themselves!" Jack yells while getting dressed as well
