i drop mr. ward's coffee off with a large yawn, wearing a large tan sweater and a white pencil skirt paired with light leather slip on dress shoes.
he doesn't say anything as i leave it on his desk and i'm almost glad for it. at least i know that nothing at work has changed.
i stop suddenly when i see vivian leaving her office with a box in hand containing little knick knacks i recognize. what's going on? why is she packing all of her stuff?
"vivian, what's going - "
"leave me alone, you insipid child." she bites, "he fired me. now i suppose you'll get my job so excuse me if i don't offer you my congratulations." she growls before stomping off.
i stand there, shocked, with my mouth open. i blink, completely unaware of what i should do. now that the gala is over, i don't even know what my job is. apparently, other assistants either quit or are fired by now so i'm not sure what's going on.
"miss harris." i hear my name called from mr. ward's office. nerves swirl in my stomach as i walk towards the door and slowly enter the room.
"yes, sir?"
"take a seat please." he tells me before taking a sip of the hot americano i brought him.
i do as he says, crossing one leg over the other as i sit down, folding my hands in my lap. "what's this about?"
he regards me with an indifferent expression for a moment before replying, "miss lark has been terminated and i would like for you to take her place considering you're already here and it wouldn't be fair to hire in someone new to oversee you."
my lips part but nothing comes out. he seems to realize my lack of ability to communicate so he continues, "of course there will be a pay raise but there will also be more responsibility and expectations on you. you can have until the end of the day to think it over if you like." he says swiftly before picking up his pen and going back to whatever he had been doing previously.
i sit there in silence for a moment before standing slowly, "sir...if i may, i'd like to accept your offer now."
he looks up from his work, peeking up past his brows, "very well. move your belongings to miss lark's old office. when you're finished, let me know. i have something for you to help me with."
"of course." i fight a grin, "and uh...thank you."
mr. ward glances up at me with an indifferent expression, giving me one nod. "no need to thank you me. please close the door on your way out."
