waking up at five in the morning absolutely sucks.
getting there at seven didn't sound so bad but, when i thought about it, i quickly realized that it takes forty-five minutes to get there and at least an hour for me to get ready and eat breakfast. also potentially pick up some coffee. another great thing about coffee shops is that they open at the crack of dawn which helps out the sad sad people like me.
"dad?" i whisper, spotting a dark figure in the kitchen as i walk in with cold feet, the only thing covering them being my thin tan panty hoes, "what are you doing up?"
he looks over at me, the light from the fridge illuminating his tired face. "i get up this early every day."
"what?" i ask him, looking at my watch. 5:45am.
he chuckles, pulling an apple from the fruit drawer and closing the door, "i get to work most days at six. on the days i'm here when you wake up it's because i come home for a break." he sips at a to go cup of coffee provided by the keurig in the corner.
my brows pull together and i set my nude pumps on the counter with my bag holding my laptop and a notebook along with my phone charger and laptop charger. i wasn't sure what i would need so i just shoved some stuff i thought would be necessary into the dark leather briefcase satchel.
"i had no idea." i sigh, wanting so badly to rub the sleep from my eyes but resisting the urge as to keep my makeup in tact.
"it's okay, kid." he chuckles, "i guess now we're in this together. it'll be nice to talk to another human being before heading off to deal with the robots at the office." he jokes lightly.
my heart warms slightly. somehow i now feel like i'm apart of something. like maybe soon my dad and i will have something in common and a way to communicate like we never have before. i suppose even if this job is difficult and i have to wake up impossibly early each day it may be worth the mornings i see my dad without a phone in his hand.
"robots." i snort, "good one."
"alright i've got to head out, i have a meeting in thirty minutes. i'll see you later, okay? good luck on your first day." he tells me, grabbing his briefcase from the counter and taking his apple with him. as soon as i hear the door quietly close i feel a soft smile spread over my lips.
grabbing a banana and a box of granola, i head out the door and almost forget to put my shoes on. slipping on the heels, i pull my coat on pull my keys out of the pocket, closing the door behind me. stepping out into the dark fall morning, i breathe in the crisp air. somehow i feel that life as i know it is about to change.
