Betty's POV

Making it through the day is hard. I can't focus in class no matter how hard I try because of all the flashbacks that emerge in my brain.

Veronica coming back to school.

Sitting in the tree with Peter when the sighting came in.

The brooch.

The death mass.

The demagorgan.

The man in the red suit.

The man in the red suit....who was he? Where did he come from? What was he doing outside of Jonathan's house? The feminist inside of me wants to think that it could have been a "she" but it was obviously a man.

I wish I could have gotten a closer look. Maybe he's related to the demagorgan situation.

I rub my eyes and look at the whiteboard, but none of the words are clear. All I see are geometric equations that wouldn't even make sense if I was paying attention.

I turn my attention to Peter, well, the back of his head that is.

Where did he go when we split up to look with Will? There's no way that he was in the bathroom for that long. He couldn't have been, unless he has a serious problem.

I've never met anyone like Peter before, so reserved and mysterious, and so handsome.

I'm so deep in thought that I don't even notice that the bell signaling the end of class is ringing until Peter gets up from his seat.

I regain focus and exit the room with Peter and Lara Jean.

"Could you guys focus in there?" I ask them as we walk down the hall together.

"Not at all," Lara Jean confesses. "I was worried that the demagorgan was going to break through the window and eat someone."

Peter shakes his head. "I did fine, I suppose. I wasn't any more distracted than usual."

I'm glad that Lara Jean couldn't focus either. It comforts me that I'm not the only one.

As we walk, my stomach rumbles and reminds me that I haven't eaten since yesterday at lunch. I put my hand on my stomach as if that will soothe its hunger.

"You good?" Peter asks, his brown eyes looking at me with a teasing worry.

"I'm hungry," I tell him. "We haven't eaten since lunch yesterday?"

He nods after a minute of thinking. "I guess I didn't even notice."

The next thing I know, three guys in serpent jackets are upon us. I've seen them before: Sweet Pea, Fangs, and Billy.

"What's up Nancy Drew?" Sweet Pea asks me as he walks around me, looking me up and down. "Man, I'm not usually into pretty little school girls school girls but...."

"Something about this one, isn't there?" Billy asks, chewing on his toothpick like he's some 80's biker, he crosses his arms and looks at me with a smirk.

I dig my nails into my hands. I can't help but feel scared. Three unwashed, muscular gang members are standing in a circle around me and I can't escape. When Billy checks me out I feel my face turn a bright shade of red.

"Hey, knock it off," I hear Peter say as he tries to break into their circle before Sweet Pea blocks his way.

"Did you hear something?" Billy asks Sweet Pea, who shakes his head. "I think it came from that little guy right there with the girl voice."

"Yeah, I can't hear him from up here," Sweet Pea replies with a smirk down at Peter. "Maybe Fangs heard him, he's short."

Sweet Pea messes up Fangs's hair before moving on.

"So, Nancy Drew," he starts again. "What do you say? I could take you to a nice bar, show you some real fun...."

"Hey! Knock it off," a voice comes from behind them.

The three serpents groan and turn around, revealing a dark haired boy in a beanie shaped like a crown: Jughead Jones.

"Oh come on," Fangs says. "Just because you're the serpent king doesn't mean you can boss us around."

"Shut up, yes it does," Sweet Pea mumbles and nudges his friend harshly. "Listen, Jones, we were just trying to have a little fun."

"Scram," Jughead commands and the three other boys reluctantly walk away.

Lara Jean rushes to my side. "Are you okay?"

I nod, but my eyes are still fixated on Jughead Jones, who stands before me with his arms crossed, his gorgeous brown eyes staring straight into my soul.

Maybe it's the shock of him saving me from his friends, but suddenly something different rises within me. It's gratitude, disbelief, and, no matter how hard I try to suppress it, lust.

After a minute and a little nudge from Lara Jean, I break from my trance and shake my head quickly.

"Thank you," I tell him with a small smile.

"Of course," he responds, the corner of his mouth turning into a half smile. "Anything for an innocent young lady."

And with that, he leaves. He turns on his heel and walks down the hallway. I watch him leave and then turn to Lara Jean and Peter. Lara Jean has a big, goofy smile on her face and Peter has his eyebrow cocked.

"What?" I ask, feeling my face turn red.

Peter just shakes his head, but Lara Jean presses farther.

"I mean, I could see it," she says with a coy, out of character smile before she turns and starts down the hall again.

As I catch up to her and Peter, I can't shake my thoughts of Jughead. I tell myself that he was just being nice, but no matter what, a girl will swoon over her Prince Charming.

Hi! Sorry this one was kind of short, but it is really going to deepen the plot. So stick around to see what happens.

I'm trying to come up with a regular updating schedule, but this whole quarintine thing has got me all over the place. Right now I'm doing my best to upload once a week but hopefully it will get better.
