Recap: (Y/n) quarrels with the explosive male, Roman. They are interrupted by a cold man known as Ellis. (Y/n) returns to her daily tasks, offering her friendship to the shy male who introduced himself as Leo.

The days working in the castle went by quickly, and before (Y/n) knew it, her first week was already over. Every day the girl would wake up, clean the library, clean the ballroom, then go to sleep. She took breaks every now and then to eat or to rest as per the doctor's orders. It no longer hurt to move, and any signs of injuries were quickly fading. (Y/n) was almost back to normal, except for the ever present pain in her heart.

The (h/c) haired girl noticed that she had grown used to the workload in the castle. Every day she would do the same tasks in the same places. After a few days (Y/n)'s hands began to work without her thinking, leaving her thoughts to wonder. Occasionally she would think about the current gossip that her fellow maids would talk about, but more often than not it was thoughts of her family that occupied her mind. She wondered how they were doing. How they would cope with her gone.

(Y/n) was guilty. While she had the comforts of food and shelter at the castle, Katy, Josh, Lily, and Liam were out in the streets of Lissun just hoping to survive. With these images in her head, the female tried to refrain from the luxuries of working in the castle. When she would eat a warm meal, she would think about the twins digging through the trash their eyes lighting up when they found a piece of discarded, rotting meat. And then (Y/n) would put down the food, her thoughts causing her to lose her appetite.

-------------------------------------------------------

(Y/n) had just finished cleaning in the library, and she was currently on her way to the ballroom. She had just finished a pleasant conversation with Leo. His childlike and kind nature never failed to leave a smile on the (h/c) haired girl's face. He reminded her of her family. She decided he was like a brother to her.

There were a few people in the hallway. (Y/n) would smile at everyone who passed, occasionally receiving a smile in return. With a skip in her step, the female increased her speed. She was eager to finish her daily chores so that she could rest.

"You'd do well to listen. Unless of course you want something to happen to your little boy." The female stopped, hearing a nearby conversation. She recognized the voice as Ellis, the cold man from a previous encounter. She wondered who he was talking to--no threatening.

"Please." the other voice begged. It was feminine and soft. "Don't hurt him."

(Y/n) clicked her tongue, not liking the male's harsh words. She peeked over at the source of the noise. There, in a more secluded hallway stood Ellis, his form towering over a female she recognized as Myrrine.

Having heard enough to know that the male harbored ill intentions towards her friend, (Y/n) emerged from her spot. "Hey, pick on someone your own size," the young girl proclaimed.

The two looked over. Myrrine's expression was one of surprise while the Ellis' expression was stoic.

"(Y/n)? What are you--" Myrrine was cut off.

"Mind your own business." Ellis's reply was short. He recognized the newcomer, having seen her once during her feud with his brother.

"What's your problem?" (Y/n) exclaimed. She was sick of watching people threatening others. It was pathetic.

The male didn't answer her question, only looked at her with distaste. He felt extreme irritation towards the girl. Her standoffish nature clashed with his powerful one. He tried to figure the girl out. Originally, he had thought she was just an unlucky person who was caught at the receiving end of his brother's rage. But now, he realized, the (h/c) haired girl was not someone who was caught in conflicts but rather someone who started them. It was unexpected to say the least. Ellis was bewildered as to why the girl would have stood up for the woman in front of him, especially with nothing to gain.

"Why," he asked, unaware that the young girl had heard him.

"What do you mean why?" (Y/n) was confused at the cold man's question. Why what?

For a split second his eyes showed surprise before clouding back to their normal, emotionless state. However (Y/n) had seen it. It was the first time she had seen the man show any emotion. It made him seem less robotic and more alive. (Y/n) would have even said he looked attractive, as his slight expression gave him a human-like beauty. Seeing as Ellis looked distracted, (Y/n) took this moment to guide the shaken mother out of the room. She gently grabbed her hand, leading her away without another glance in the dark haired male's direction.

-------------------------------------------------------

The dark haired male stared as the two woman walked away. His eyes stayed glued to the hallway, even after the pair had been long gone.

How odd. Ellis was somewhat intrigued by the (h/c) haired female. He had always been able to figure people out. It was his gift, one that he used to gain power over others. If he could know their secrets—their true intentions—then he could use them to his benefit. He was manipulative and cruel. His cold eyes were everywhere, always watching. Yet, somehow a certain female had managed to escape his calculating gaze.

(Y/n) hmm? the male mused. He was determined to figure out the girl, and he knew the perfect place to start looking.

Ellis walked towards his office, where he knew there would be information on (Y/n). There, he kept the files of everyone who entered the castle. It was as a...precaution. However, the documents were rarely ever looked at. After all, the dark haired male could figure out everything he needed to know about a person by just observing them. (Y/n), that odd girl, was the exception. However, he had every intent on figuring her out.

He pulled out a key and unlocked a small drawer in his desk. The files were organized so that the newest editions to the castle were groups together, so the male had no trouble finding a paper with (Y/n) (L/n) on the top. He grabbed the document, sliding the drawer shut. Taking a seat, he put on a pair of metal glasses.

Well (Y/n), let's see who you really are.

The file was quick to read. Each line held little information about the female: just common knowledge like her name, age, and where she was from. He was somewhat disappointing with the lack of helpful knowledge. After all, he couldn't find anything he could hold against the girl. She had no family, no wealth, and no evident weaknesses. She was just a poor girl from a small town in the kingdom. So why of all people was she special? Why couldn't he figure her out?

Having analysed the information, Ellis returned the file to its original spot. He would have to find other ways to get more information about the girl. His thoughts drifted to the earlier encounter, and his lips turned up ever so slightly.

Ah, yes. That woman seemed to know (Y/n), he recalled. With a newfound purpose he briskly left his office. He didn't think the woman would give up the (h/c) haired girl's information so easily. However, he knew that with a little push she would tell him everything he needed to know. In the end he always got what he wanted. He always got them to talk.

Hey everyone sorry for another a/n. I just wanted to say that I noticed the weird formatting with the spacing, and I'm just about to fix it. By the time you read this I'll probably be done with that. 😂 Anyway I hope everyone is healthy and safe. Also stay tuned for the new chapter tomorrow!
