Sunset Walk

Locking the door behind me, I stuffed the keys in the pocket of my black jeans.

I gripped the straps of my backpack as I looked around for anything suspicious, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

The sun was close to setting in front of us, bathing the streets in warm hues of gold. The cotton-candy clouds blushed at the warm touch.

Houses displayed long, stretched shadows. The wind was cold, and my converse squeaked lightly as I jogged to catch up to Stephen, the backpack thudding against my back.

Since most people were self-isolating themselves, the road was clear of cars. The only sounds at the moment were the quiet clomping of footsteps.

Stephen and I were walking smack in the middle of the road.

I thought it was unsafe, but since there were no cars around, I let it slide.

As we walked further in silence, the sun dropped lower and lower. The warm hues of yellows slowly shifted to colours of fire and tangerine.

"How long until we get there?" I nervously asked, nudging Stephen softly. He had his hands stuffed in the pockets of his black sweater.

"Not long," Stephen shrugged. "We're just a few minutes away."

I nodded, glancing at a screeching crow in someone's yard. "Do you think we'll make it before the sun sets?"

"Yeah, don't worry," Stephen gives me a lazy smile. "We're good."

I smile back at him, some of my anxiety melting away.

The crescent of sun was just starting to disappear when we made it.

As Stephen banged on the door, I let out a breath I'd been holding.

We hadn't encountered any zombies, much less even seen one.

I was just scared for nothing, then.

The brief walk gave me motivation. I felt a little more upbeat than I had before.

The door snapped open, revealing the irritated face of Dan's. "Stop banging on the door, will ya?"

Stephen grumbled in response.

Daniel's face softened into a smaller frown when he saw me. "Hey, Hosuh."

I looked between the two of my friends, both wearing upset faces as they stared at each other.

Was there something going on between them that I didn't know about?

Jay's face popped up from behind Dan. "Hey guys! Want some orange juice?" He raised a glass of mushy orange puree. "I made it myself!"

"Did you use all my oranges for that?" Stephen gave him a stink eye. "Don't tell me you did."

"Should we go inside?" I awkwardly asked, pointing to the darkness of the neighbourhood. "It's

getting dark..."

Dan stepped aside, letting Stephen and I walk through the door.

"Hosuh, wanna try my orange juice?" Jay asked, shoving the glass of carrot-coloured mush in my hands.

"Uh... I'm good," I gave a weak smile, holding the cup out back to him. I was pretty sure this wasn't your usual homemade orange juice. Jay could've spiked it, for all I know.

"Okay," Jay said, snatching the cup away. He turned to Dan, who was having a cookie in the kitchen. "Dan! Wanna try my orange juice?" He shouted.

"No thanks," the green-eyed boy replied, wrinkling his nose.

"So, what now?" I asked, taking off my shoes and shrugging off my backpack.

"Oh yeah," Stephen said. "Jay and Dan are sleeping in the guest room, so we'll be sharing a room," he gave me a cheeky smile. "You can go unpack."
