gods im sorry this one's so short
I woke up to being shaken awake.
Opening one heavy eyelid and looking up, bleary-eyed Stephen was staring down at me.
"What is it?" I slurred, blinking.
"Good morning. It's been 2 hours," Stephen explained. "We're getting McDonald's."
I sat up, rubbing the gunk out of my eye. "Ooh, McDonald's."
"I figured you wanted to choose your own order," Stephen leaned back on my bunk bed, sighing. "I would've let you sleep, but you're really picky when it comes to food."
"I'm not picky," I reasoned.
Stephen rolled his eyes. "Sure you're not, Hosuh. Tell me what you want."
"Happy meal?" I shrugged, yawning. "I don't know."
"Mkay, be right back."
With that, he jumped off my bed, jolting the trailer a little.
I sighed as I sunk back into the bed.
As I glanced to my window, I noticed some raindrops pattered on the outside of the glass. Few of the water droplets occasionally ran down the window, racing each other to the bottom.
I smiled. So it was raining?
It was pretty sunny before. There weren't really any signs whatsoever of it raining today.
As I stared at the bare ceiling of the trailer, collecting my little thoughts, I listened to the sound of gentle pattering on the roof.
I'd slept for two hours? It definitely didn't feel that long.
Now that I was awake, I wouldn't be able to go back to sleep. Might as well get ready.
I searched for the hairbrush in my backpack, feeling better after listening to the sound of the rain.
Truthfully, I did feel more refreshed; maybe that 2 hour nap did me some good.
I took out my hair elastic and started brushing my hair, when I noticed the pink-haired child at the steering wheel.
She was fiddling with the buttons, looking bored. Winnie, her small dog, was by her side, sniffing at the wheel.
I don't think I've ever seen Winnie without her owner. It was like that dog was glued to Pink.
Dan, Jay, and Stephen were nowhere in the trailer, from what I could see.
I assumed they were ordering the food right now at the McDonald's.
Sure enough, almost as soon as I thought that, three boys clambered back into the trailer, holding McDonald's to-go bags.
"We got the food," Dan announced, holding up the two bags. Behind him, Jay and Stephen were already smacking on some fries.
"Food," the girl jumps from the driver's seat, scrambling into the back of the trailer. "Where are my chicken nuggets?"
Dan digs through the bag, pulling out a happy meal and handing it to Pink.
"They should be in here," he says, gesturing to the red box in her hands. "Unless it got mixed up."
As I climb down from my bunk bed, Dan passes out all the other foods.
"You ordered a happy meal too, right?" Dan asks me, fishing out another bright red box. I nod, and he hands me the happy meal.
"This is the good stuff," Jay remarks with his mouth full. His hamburger is already eaten and he's cramming down fries like a vacuum cleaner.
"You're gonna choke," Dan laughs, taking out his own order from the bag.
"That's fun," Stephen murmurs.
"Who's driving next?" I popped another fry in my mouth.
"Can I drive?" Pink bubbles. "I know how to drive!"
We all shake our heads simultaneously.
The girl slumps.
"Is it because I'm underage?" She pouts. "That's discrimination."
"It's not discrimination," Dan scoffs, patting her head. "You're just likely gonna get us all killed with your reckless driving."
The girl huffs and crosses her arms, leaning back on Stephen's bed. She chews on her chicken nuggets silently.
"I guess I can drive next," Jay volunteers casually. "I finished eating already anyways."
"Sure. Just don't crash and you'll be fine."
"Aw shucks, there go my plans."
And we got back to driving.
The trailer was riding along a narrow country road that looked dusty and rutted. Trees were all around us, yellow and brown and shedding their leaves. September was almost ending.
Another big city could be seen in the distance.
All the huge buildings and houses were as big as minuscule dots.
In the trailer, the small girl was back to not talking.
Her dog was currently tottering through the trailer, sniffing everything it could sniff.
She also basically adopted Stephen's bed, sticking to it like glue.
There was literally no way we could get her out of it, and she whined and grumbled whenever we tried.
So Stephen had to borrow Jay's bed while we drove on. Meaning he was right across from my own bunk bed.
This way, we decided to play silent rock paper scissors. The score right now was 18-21, with me in the lead.
And Dan's bed was empty right now.
Since the trailer was a bit spacey, the green-eyed boy was able to sit by Jay, who was in charge of driving for the next 2 hours.
The two of them, Dan and Jay, were having a quiet conversation. It couldn't really be heard over the radio and the purring of the vehicle.
Everything was silent and peaceful.
I was pretty sure the unfamiliar city we were driving to right now didn't have any zombies walking around yet, so we were as safe as we could be.
"Hey," Dan turns to us, breaking the comfortable silence. "I was wondering, since there's five of us, -"
"Six," Pink interrupted, pointing at her puppy.
Stephen scoffed. "A dog isn't a person, idiot."
The child sent him a look of fury. It didn't even look that threatening, though.
"And if we only have 4 bunk beds," the broccoli continued, unfazed, "where's the kid gonna sleep?"
"I'm sleeping in this bed," she smiled innocently, patting the mattress of Stephen's bunk.
The grape head boo-ed at her.
"That's my bed, you -"
"So one of us has to share?" I cut off Stephen, tilting my head.
Dan nodded, closing his eyes for a moment. "Yeah."
"Dibs not me!" Jay screeched from the driver's seat.
