On a Tuesday afternoon the boys of 5 Seconds of Summer are on the studio having a meeting.
“We need to come up with a solution, boys” Ashton says. They are talking about the new song, Easier, that is about to be recorded and Luke’s voice isn’t consistent enough to do that and play live on shows and promo events.
“What are the options?” Calum say. He doesn’t know why they are so worried about it, the problem is easy fixable.
“We can always down an octave or use autotune, but the outcome won’t be the best plus this wont help live” Michael starts saying, leaning over the coffee table to grab his water bottle.
“I know you don’t wanna bring this up” Ash starts, the red-haired man seems uncomfortable with the words he’s about to say, “but we can’t ignore we have three other great voices here, so if nothing works, we can give this song to another person sing”.
If the silence could speak, it would say 'what the fuck?'. All the four guys are avoiding eye contact now because they know Ash is right. If nothing works Luke will need to give this song to another one of the boys.
Luke, who hasn’t spoken a word yet breaks the silence, finally say something, “You’re right Ash, I think Calum should try”.
Cal looks at Luke with his eyes wide open “What?” he manages to say.
“Yeah mate, your falsetto is better than mine” Luke says, trying to hide the fact he’s feeling like shit right now. He's the lead singer, he shouldn't need to have this conversation because he’s supposed to reach those notes.
The sun is setting and the golden light that’s coming through the large window are making all the guy’s skin glow. Luke's blue eyes are green because of that. After what seemed an eternity, Mike starts the conversation again, “Or we can go with simpler option”.
“And what is that?” Ash says, everybody turns their attention to the blond boy.
“Luke can do some voice lessons” Mike finishes saying, looking into Luke’s eyes, “you’re already so close, you just need a little push, and besides that, that’s what vocal coaches are paid for” the tension is starting to fade away, making all of them relax.
“That’s it, we can talk to our manager to get a vocal coach for you” Cal’s smile is back in his face, he’s feeling good with the solution they came up with because he doesn’t want to be the lead singer in Easier when the hole song has been shaped around Luke’s voice.
“Yeah mate, I'm gonna call our manager tomorrow and get some recommendations for you” Ashton says, he always dealt with these things, but now he’s feeling guilty. Even though this is necessary, Luke never been good in hiding his emotions, and everybody in the room could tell he’s not in a happy place right now.
“Okay, let’s give it a try” The blue eyed man says, running his finger through his blond curls.
As the hype man, Ashton know he got to do something to make Luke feel better, so he invited the boys to grab some beers and go do nothing elsewhere. They've been in the studio for too long today. They go to a local bar and spend the rest of the night there, dinking, dancing and having fun. As the alcohol starts running through their veins, they start forgetting temporarily about what happened earlier.
*********
The next day comes and the four Aussie guys are back at the studio. This time Luke is feeling better, he definitively wants to try some vocal lessons to improve his skills.
“So, guys” Ashton starts to talk as he makes his way to sit on the couch, “I talked to our manager and he recommended this guy, he said he’s the best voice teacher/vocal coach he knows.” He gives Calum a black card.
