I walked deeper into the forest, pulling my scarf tight around my neck. The trees gazed down at me from towering heights, and I looked up at their majestic beauty. I stopped at the base of a tree and placed my hand on its trunk, stroking it. My fingers left a crumbling trail of the bark that was starting to chip off. I breathed in the woody smell around me and continued walking further.
This forest has been a part of my life for five years now. I would come here whenever I felt alone or confused. The first time I discovered this place was when I had left my home at the age of thirteen. I was young and scared, but determined. My home before this was a long way away from here. I lived with my mom, dad and siblings. My siblings were only toddlers. They would follow me around everywhere, laughing and giggling as I picked them up. They would try to catch the butterflies that fluttered around the field, and stroke the flowers around them and gaze at me like I was the most beautiful thing they'd ever seen. My parents were as sweet as can be, and I loved them with all my heart.

One night changed everything forever. Our cottage was raided by officials who had accused my dad of robbery. He was falsely accused of something he didn't do, and they forbid him from working anymore. My father was a proud man, and considered it his responsibility to run the family in the best way possible. He couldn't live with the thought of failure. That he had failed his family. That he had failed himself. That he had failed in his life. Every time he stepped outside his home, he was greeted with mockery and angry glares that prodded his heart, destroying him each day. Till one day he didn't have to deal with it anymore. He loved us. He loved mom, my two siblings, Anna and Lilly, and me. That's why he had to do what he did, he explained to us in a letter that was left floating in the wind after he had written in it. The words in the letter were his. The warm familiar smell of my father never left the room. His essence stayed there, reminding us of his death. It was mom who found him. She had walked up the stairs to look for him, and maybe offer some words of comfort and love. She walked in and screamed, stumbling backwards at the sight in front of her. It was dad.

His lifeless body hung in the air, held by a rope that was tied to the fan. His dark hair and handsome face were in odd angles because of the pressure from the rope. The scream woke my sisters up, and they ran up the stairs, with me running behind them. I stopped short of the doorway, seeing my mom on the floor, helpless and weak. Anna and Lilly walked into the room, and started crying when they saw dad. Lilly walked over to dad and touched his leg, running her warm fingers over his cold, frozen legs. A tear slid down from her cheeks as she turned away and ran to me, crying into my shoulder. Anna lay next to my mother, stroking her blonde hair softly. I hugged my sisters close to me, finding comfort in their embrace. They looked at me, their blue eyes bright with tears. I wiped their eyes, and held back tears as I tried to be the calm one. We stayed that way till morning, unable to move from the place of our fathers death.

The next morning, an ambulance took our father away. He was covered with a sheet, never to be seen again. Mom was also taken away and was declared dead. She had died from the shock. The last thing we saw was the bodies of our parents being carried away into the morgue. Everyone we saw met our gazes with sympathy and pity, but that was what we hated the most. My sisters, then only four years old, clung to me, looking to me for comfort. We left the hospital together and I was determined to do everything in my power to keep us alive and safe.

I closed my eyes and sighed at the memory. I ran my hands along each tree that I passed by. Being this close to nature; it comforted me. We never went back to the cottage after that. We travelled far away from there with whatever money we had left. Everything was a blur, but I followed my intuition and we came to this little town called Yale that was surrounded by forests and streams. Our new life started from here.

Life takes you places you won't ever dream of going, like my father always said.
