chapter iv, episode ii

Teagan stood in the assembly hall beside her friends, her face screwed up in distaste as she listened to Jenny Joyce and the singing club's rendition of "Love is All Around." The rest of her friend's faces matched her unamused expression, apart from Orla who was watching the performance in awe. She took her lighter out and started waving the flame around as if she were at a real concert.

"Sweet Jesus." Michelle muttered while the rest were at a loss for words. By the end of the song, Orla was the only one in the whole assembly hall to clap as Sister Michael took the singing club's place on stage.

"Wonderful, girls. Lovely stuff," the nun said stiffly, "before I dismiss you for the weekend, a few announcements. On Monday morning, several of our Year 13s will face their GCSE maths resit. Now, I know how daunting resit examinations can be, so if anyone feels anxious or worried, or even just for a chat, please, please... do not come crying to me. Let me see, what else?"

"Come on, come on, come on to fuck!" Michelle impatiently chanted under her breath. Teagan bounced on the balls of her feet in anticipation, awaiting the announcement that she and her friends had been looking forward to.

"Notice from Mr McCauley: this year's destination for the Euro Trotters trip will be, dramatic pause," Sister Michael turned to Mr McCauley and asked, "did you actually want me to do the dramatic pause?" The old man simply nodded and Sister Michael gave him a look of muse and commented, "interesting," before turning back to assembly and getting on with the announcement, "Paris. It's going to be Paris."

The school erupted with murmurs of joy as Teagan let out a squeal. She grabbed the arm of the person closest to her out of excitement, and that person happened to be James. He looked down at her, a soft smile on his face as her dainty hands clutched his scrawny arm. The ginger girl was oblivious to James looking at her as she listened to Sister Michael.

"If you need any further information, there is a stall in the foyer. Sadly, I am unable to come on this one as I despise the French." The nun explained before she lead the assembly prayer, "in the name of The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit."

"Paris! The city of love..." Teagan let out a dreamy sigh as the gang entered the foyer. She turned to face her friends, skilfully walking backwards as she continued, "I can just imagine it; I meet a French boy, he falls madly in love with me and we kiss at the top of the Eiffel Tower. So romantic!" The redhead clasped her hands over her chest and swooned dramatically, her long eyelashes fluttering. The girls shook their heads in amusement at the hopeless romantic, while James looked down, a small frown on his face. The thought of Teagan kissing a French lad made him feel uncomfortable but he couldn't quite understand why.
