The Run

I met Zach outside my tent. I was given shorts from Jonah's girlfriend, Tate, to have while I was here without clothes. I fixed my hair into a more secure ponytail then I had before we left. I trusted Zach enough to lead me somewhere he wouldn't kill me. It felt like he wanted to sometimes, but I always just shrugged off the feeling.

We walked to the trail opening and did a stretch in silence. My heart was already beating with excitment. I loved running. I always have. I wasn't quite done my stretch before Zach started down the trail. I rolled my eyes and let him go ahead, it looked like a straight path for half a mile, plenty of time for me to catch up to him. Once I was finished, I started off in a sprint to catch up with him.

It didn't take long for me to catch up and pass him. It was freeing to run, when I finally passed him it didn't feel like I was trapped here, like I was a prisoner. It wasn't like it was bad here, no if I could I would bring my family here, but I couldn't do that.

When I looked behind me, I realized I couldn't see Zach anymore and I had no idea where I was.

This would be the perfect time to escape and go back home, the only problem was, where was home? I started to walk around aimlessly when a body suddenly hit mine and took us both to the ground.

"WHat in the hell!" I almost screamed. When we stopped, I looked over me too see who my attacker was. Surprise, surprise, Zach was hovering overtop of me looking made as all hell.

"Where do you think you're going?" he hissed.

"To get away from you!" I spat back. He was infuriating and extremly close to me.

"Not into there you're not. You'll never make it out alive." I looked to where he was pointing and saw the small line of metal with spikes poking out of the ground. "It's a border between us and the next camp over. Go there and you're dead." I didn't let his quick look at my lips go unnoticed, but I didn't want to act on it.

"How am I supposed to know that?" I asked, my voice low and hoarse. I did just run three miles, give me a break.

He hung his head low before moving away from me. "You're not," he sighed. He stood from the ground and dusted himself off. I sat up and rubbed the side of my head, when I brought my fingers to my face, I started to feel the blood trickle down it.

"Fuck," I hissed, sucking in a deep breath.

Zach, who had his fingers raked through his hair and back turned to me, looked to me suddenly and went wide eyed. "Shit," he cursed under his breath. He knelt down beside me to examine the wound.

I brushed his hand away from me, "I'm fine, Zach." I tried to insist, but he just kept going back.

He finally got fed up with my efforts and grabbed both my hands in his, "Abby," he demanded. I didn't think he meant too, but he gripped my wrists a little to tight and pulled me a little to close. Our noses almost touched and when he realized what he had done, he didn't pull away. Instead, his breath hitched in his throat.

"Close your eyes," his voice came demanding, but also a little shaky. I did as told, not really knowing what was going to happen.

Just as they fluttered close, I felt his hands leave my wrists. I didn't feel his presence anymore and assumed he had left me, but I kept my eyes closed nonetheless. Just as I was about to give up and leave, I felt him lean into my ear.

"Keep your eyes closed, princess." he whispered in my ear. "After I leave, I want you to head back to camp. I want to know if I can trust you," his breath fanned my skin, causing me to shudder. I felt his fingers brush away hair that landed on my shoulder during the fall. I flinched at the contact. His fingers moved from my neck and traced up my jaw until they cupped my cheek. I couldn't help but lean into his touch. He held me there for a second before I felt him come close to my face.

Lightly, his lips brushed against mine and almost instantly, my lips parted to let him kiss me. He pressed against me a litle harder, putting more passion into the kiss this time. We moved in sync until we lost our breath. I kept my eyes closed as he requested. I heard him drag out a long sigh before he spoke.

"I really am sorry I had to keep you here. I hope you decide to come back, Abby," the way my name rolled off his tongue made me swoon. "I really do." With that, I heard his footsteps slowly fade away and I knew he was gone.
