Surprisingly El was up before me and I didn't open my eyes until the smell of fresh coffee drifted towards my nose. I could hear her pacing around in the kitchen, murmuring to herself.
I sat up on the edge of the bed. Trina and El's other roommate hadn't returned last night so I had shot her a text and she let me sleep in her bed. It seemed to me that she had quite the social life.
With some shorts and a random tee shirt on, I opened the door and tried to survey the air. Sometimes you could never tell what kind of mood those two would be in.
My head peaked around the corner and I witnessed Trina give El a little kiss on the cheek as she passed her by. Hopefully this meant they were both happy.
"Good morning El. Sleep alright?" I stepped around her to grab myself a mug for some coffee. When her eyes caught sight of me she smiled.
"Yep. And you? Did you even sleep at all?" The excitement was evident in her voice which caused me to chuckle.
"I got a few hours in." With that I sat down at the dining room table and lit myself a cigarette. El followed my lead and soon we were both melting off the early morning vibes.
"You have to look amazing for this interview. There's no question about it. You can borrow some of my clothes if you'd like." I nodded my head and took a puff from my cigarette.
Trina had offered for me to be in rotation with them but I decided against it for obvious reasons.
"I really appreciate you, El."
Trina and El had decided that they would walk around the store while I had my interview, that way we could take one car and hang out afterwards.
We arrived at 12:45 and my heart was pounding. I shakily got out of the car and walked inside trying my hardest to look semi confident.
I had decided on Eloise's flared blue jeans that were a dark fade which hugged my hips nicely, and a flowy black top. My hair was straight down my back and I wore natural looking makeup. Simple yet pretty.
Not knowing where exactly to go, I walked up to the only cashier that was near the front doors. I could tell it was a guy but his back was turned.
I cleared my throat awkwardly to get his attention and started to talk.
"My name is Dane and I'm here for an interview at one o'clock?" I smiled to try and make my resting face look friendly.
He fully turned around and I couldn't quite gauge the thoughts that shone in his eyes. They just looked blank. A brilliant beautiful green, but blank.
"You'll go through the black double doors at the back of the store and then to your left you'll see the office door." After he finished his statement he turned back around, seemingly brushing me off.
Wanting to say something but keeping my mouth shut instead, I followed his directions. Once I had reached the door with "OFFICE" written in bold letters, I softly knocked.
"Come in!" It was a deep voice that shockingly belonged to a woman.
I peaked my head in and introduced myself.
"Yes! Oh yes! Thank goodness you're here. The others never showed." I could tell that this lady was slightly panicking but was trying to keep her cool.
She was on the slightly bigger side but her sweet personality made you look right past it. Her eyes were a deep brown and she had golden blonde hair.
I sat down in the fold out chair she waved at and prepared myself for her questions. She took copies of my social security card and driver's license and asked me the generic interview questions.
Slowly I started getting more comfortable around her and answered her questions quickly and accurately. She would nod her head and take notes as I would talk.
Finally after what felt like forever, she sat her notepad down and turned to face me.
"Alright sweety, I believe that's all of the questions I have for you. Do you have any questions for me?"
I sat and thought for a minute before I BB ended up shaking my head no. This caused her to continue.
"Well then you're hired. If possible, I would like you to start Monday. What's your preferred shirt size?"
In shock, I told her my size and she dug me out my new work shirt. She handed it to me and shook my hand.
"See you at 12 on Monday, Dane!" Then she
ushered me out of her office and shut the door behind me. She must be a very busy woman.
I walked back through the black double doors to see El and Trina low key waiting for me by the bread aisle. Once El's eyes caught sight of me she instantly started towards me.
"So, how'd it go?"
I held up the new shirt with a huge smile plastered on my face. El did her usual excited jumping and hugged me.
We made it back to their car and hopped into our usual seating arrangements.
"How about a blunt now, Dane?" Trina turned in the passenger seat to look at me.
"Fuck yeah."
That's all it took and soon we were all giggling while riding around.
I let them know that my first day was Monday and this made them super happy. That was a full week away and we had all that time to live it up.
El got the idea that I could use that time to start moving my stuff in. And that made me realize that I had to tell my mom that I was moving out.
Gathering all of my courage, I decided that I would just text her about it.
Hey mom. I got a job today :)
She texted back almost immediately.
That's wonderful honey. I didn't even know you were applying. Where is it at?
Yeah El and Trina said that I could be their roommate so I started putting in applications. It's at the small grocery story in Wren.
My heart started to beat faster if that was even possible.
So you're moving in with them?
I held my breath as I typed back.
If that's okay with you.
I believe Trina could sense my anxiety because she sparked up another blunt and handed it straight to me.
You're 18 now, Dane. If this is what you want then, yes you can move. Just let me know what's up every once in a while okay? You're still my baby.
Tears started to prick my eyes and I couldn't help but feel strong emotions about the situation at hand. Mom and I had been through so many hard times and I just loved her so much.
I love you momma. I will, I promise. Tomorrow I'll come home and pick up a few things. We can do makeup if you want too.
She let me know that she would enjoy spending some time with me. The three of us headed to now "our" place and I smiled at that.
