I had to talk to Drew about that man. Well, first of all, he had given me his number, and showed me a few documents that proved that he was not lying to me, and he was who he claimed to be. That meant that we had an option, a really good one.
I showed Jared all we had so far, and he did like it. He said that we had a really good idea in mind, and that we had designed it rightly. But, he said that we needed to work more in that, because, according to him, it was improvable to get people to accept it as it was. I was not going to discuss that; he was the one in order to help us.
He seemed to be a nice guy. Well, you must be if you want to help a couple of kids who want to do something that seems totally crazy; unless there is a bad intention behind it all. Most people would think that we would never do that, or that we were crazy, and so on... But he heard me, thought about our idea, and accepted to try to help us. That meant the world to me.
He was blond, with brown eyes like the chocolate. He was slim and kind of tall.
I had decided that as soon as I went back to Drew's room I was going to talk to him about Jared. He would be really happy to hear that our work was finally working, or about to work.
I could finally go back to his room. I spent a while with him, but asking him about his health and how he was feeling. I loved the sound of his voice so much. Then, I decided it was time to tell him about that.
- Drew - I started looking at those eyes that I loved so much, that were like the blue sea -, I've got to tell you something that you'll like to hear. Someone is coming, if you don't mind.
- What? Who? - He did not know what I was talking about at all.
After he asked that, Jared entered the room. Drew got really surprised about that, as anyone would. After he started asking Jared who he was, Jared started talking.
- Hello, Drew - said Jared -, my name is Jared, Jared Solem, Anna already knows me. I'm the person who's going to sponsor you guys in your project, well, if you want it. I'll give you money and I'll make your idea work out.
Drew's face showed absolutely happiness. He first looked at me like checking if it all was true. I assented with my head as an answer.
I asked Drew about what he thought of all that. I wanted to know if he agreed or not. We were in this together, and the decision of accepting or rejecting that help was of the both of us. Drew did not even think twice, he accepted it without any problem with that. And that was awesome.
Even though he was not in the best conditions physically, he still wanted to work hard in our project with Jared and me. Drew told me that the doctor had told him that he was getting better really fast, which was incredible. I told him that then the best thing he could do was to rest and then he would heal even with more speed. But he said he was not going to rest. I understood him, he felt the same way as I did: he wanted to make that project happen as soon as possible.
- Okay guys - started talking Jared -, I know that this idea maybe isn't very agreeable for you, but I guess it's a good one. You told me that the reason for you to do this was the death of your best friend, then you have to go with that.
- What do you mean? - I asked him.
- I mean that you have to be honest with people. Show them your scars and tell them the real reasons behind what you're doing. Even if that means crying in front of them; crying is a sign of having feelings, and it moves people. You might think I'm out of my mind, but people have to be sympathetic somehow. And all I need is you to be honest, tell them that your friend passed away, and that there can't be more deaths for the same reason; he was so young. I know this will be hard for you guys to tell, but that way we'll make people realize. I've got money, but I can't just make your project true with only that. We can't do this on our own. I need you help; will you do that?
- I guess that what you're saying is the only way to fulfill our purpose - answered Drew -.
That was a "yes". We had to do that, even though it hurt. You have to do hard things to get good ones, right?
When Drew went out of the hospital, we were going to make some sort of campaign to get schools to know about our idea. But, before that, there was something we had to manage too.
There was going to be a trial about what happened to Drew, because there was going to be a sentence towards Ethan, and they had to figure out what it was going to be.
I guessed that the trial had to be in our minds before the campaign, that was for sure. I was looking forward to do the campaign, it was going to be awesome. The fact that we had Jared by our side was the best strategy we could have; especially because he had something we did not: money.
--------------
Four days had passed by after the shooting, and we had to go to the trial. Drew was recovering well, and he was in good physical conditions to go there. I had to go too, as a witness, and also as the person who almost got a shot too. So that, I was going there with the idea that I was going to talk, and a lot probably. I would have to tell everything that happened, which I did not like at all. But I knew everything was for our sake one way or another. Ethan had to go to the jail for all he did, and we had to make that true. Ethan was a danger to people, especially to us. I also had curiosity about the owner of the gun: I did not know if it was Ethan or not.
Finally we were there. I was so nervous, even trembling. I guessed that Drew was too, but he seemed to be so calm. I had never been in a trial before, so I did not know how things worked. That was not something I would think about; well, most teenagers do not think of those things. But in that moment I was thinking about that, because I had a pretty good reason to. I was going to see how it was in a few minutes, but I could not hide my worry about that.
The judge was there, in the center of the table. Then I saw the people who were supposed to be the lawyer and the fiscal. Also I was Ethan with handcuffs sitting where he was supposed to. Also there was a lot of people who I did not know.
They started describing what, in theory, had happened and all that boring stuff. It was a really long talk, actually, and it was boring me. After that, it was the time for the victim and the accused to talk. Ethan tried to defend himself with lame excuses, which was impossible; and Drew explained more things too. Then, it was my turn to talk. God, I was so nervous I thought I could not talk, but finally I could.
I said everything that had happened that morning, including the project and all, which I thought I had to say. I also said how I tried to make Ethan not to shoot me with the pistol, and how he finally did not give me a shot.
- Okay, so we already have te proof of the victim, the accused and the witness. It is time for the lawyer to talk.
Drew's lawyer started talking and defending him, as lawyers are supposed to do. After that, the fiscal started defending Ethan and I thought that just could not work out anyway.
After a long time of talk, it was time for the lawyer to decide a sentence. He seemed not to be really sure about what he was going to decide. I was trembling again.
- I have decided - said the judge and my heart was beating so hard that I could hear it - that the accused is... guilty. Ethan Richards will go to reform school for two years, and to jail four years after that.
I honestly felt happy, because that's what Ethan deserved. He had done something really bad, and he had to pay for that. I was happy, justice was working! We had that problem solved, we just had another arrangement to finish with.
When we went out of there, a huge group of journalists were there, waiting for us. When I say huge, I mean, they were actually a lot of journalists.
They surrounded Drew and started making him a lot of questions.
- It is said that you and your friend want to change the world; is that true? - Asked some journalist to Drew.
- We don't want to change the world; we're going to change it - answered him with a very decided voice; I smiled when I heard that -. We have a plan, we have a manager. All we need is to convince people that this world needs a change, and our idea is good enough to do that.
The journalists got surprised about that; how not? What Drew said was awesome, and that could give us an article in some newspaper, which was perfect. That was going to promote us, and a lot.
