It was Monday, and we were going to start our campaign. We were in Jared's car, which was really big, and in our way to the first school we were going to visit. It was a really small one from a small town near Boulder. It was at thirty minutes by car from out town, not much though.
We had some speech prepared: Drew and I were the ones supposed to speak there. Drew was already feeling perfectly physically, well, and emotionally too. We were so excited about that, and trying our best to make it right.
----------
We were finally in the school, and so nervous. We had some sort of meeting with all the faculty of the school, which was like a reunion, but for us it was more than that.
They were all sitting in a huge table. Someone I thought was the principal was in the centre, and around him a lot of documents with out project for them to read it, and one for each person there. With that, they all could see what we wanted to do, and before that we were going to explain it.
We explained them all what we wanted to do in a clear way. Drew and I talked the whole time, Jared did not say a word, but he did not have to do so anyway.
Then, the entire faculty was going to talk to each other, without us there to decide whether to accept our idea or not. I hoped that they accepted it, but I was not sure they were going to do so; it was hard to guess looking at their faces. Jared was worried, because he was not sure either. That could not give us much hope honestly.
- Do you think that they will accept to do our project? - Asked Drew to Jared.
- I don't know - answered Jared -, I'm not sure if they will or not.
That did not help us much, how could that help us? Actually, at least, he was being honest, which was not bad after all. Sometimes it is better to expect the worst, but also hope for the best to happen. They were spending a lot of time talking, which could be whether good or bad, we just did not know.
After like fifteen minutes talking, the principal came to us with the purpose of giving us the answer. We were all so nervous, even Jared, who seemed like a quiet man.
- Our answer is - started the principal -; even though you're offering us a lot of money, I'm so sorry, but we cannot accept your proposal.
- It's okay - answered Jared with a sad expression in his face -, thank you for giving us your time, sir.
All we could feel was disappointment, absolutely disappointment. Whatever happened, we could not give up yet, it was the first school we came up with our idea, and not the last one. Giving up was not even an option, it is not an option if you want to win, and we did want to win.
Jared told us where our next school to go was. It was in the same town. It was bigger than the first one though, but it was not much bigger anyway.
We expected that in that school maybe they would decide to at least try our idea. I was not angry with the other school's faculty, it was normal not to believe our idea was good enough to try it; it would be a miracle if any school accepted it. Who was going to believe two teenagers and a manager with an idea to "change the world"? Nobody would do that, or at least that is what I thought. Honestly, if I had been an adult and someone came up to me with that idea, I do not know if I would think it could work out. But I did believe in our idea.
-----------------
We went so fast there, and the faculty of that school received us so nicely. They were all smiling and cheering us like we had done something, when he had not. It was kind of weird.
- Hello - started the principal -, it's a pleasure to have you here - that sentence was one of the weirdest things of the day, in a good way -. As you can see I'm the principal here, and I want to hear about your project. I've heard a few things, and what I heard touched my heart. That story about your best friend is heartbreaking, and it's amazing that you want to change that.
- If you don't mind me asking, where have you heard about our best friend, sir? - I asked really surprised about that comment of the principal.
After my question, the principal handed us a newspaper, and told us to open it in a certain page he said. We did it as we had said. And what we read there was one of the most amazing things I have read in my entire life, if not the most amazing one.
