Our annual mountain trip. I wasn't particularly happy with it, knowing Mike was going to be there, with his girlfriend, and my best friend Hannah has a crush on him. And so do I. But she's my best friend, and I would never do that to her. Fuck me and my conscious. So I got real drunk with Josh and my brother Chris and passed out in the kitchen. I stir slightly when I hear giggling. I begrudgingly open my eyes to see a few people leaving the kitchen.
"Hey, Em. I'm not anybody's man." Mike insists. "Whatever you say, darling." Emily scoffs. She always was a bit of a bitch. Thinking nothing of it, I lay my head back on the table. Until a few minutes later when I hear arguing at the front door. "What's going on? Where's my sister going?" Beth says. I stumble out of the chair, making my way to the door. I trip a few times, still a bit tipsy. "Ugh, it's fine, she just can't take a joke..." Jess says. "It was just a prank, Han!" Emily calls. "What did you do?!?" I try my hardest not to slur my words while accusing them. "We were just messing around.... It wasn't serious -" Mike tries to explain. "You JERKS!" Beth shouts, then runs into the woods. "Hannah! HANNAH!" She calls. "Is Hannah out there?" I exclaim. The nod solemnly.
"So... should we go after her?" Mike asks. "Y'know I kinda think you're the LAST person she wants to see right now, Mike." Sam accuses. "You guys pranked her?" I seethe. "We knee she like Mike, it was a dumb prank." Emily scoffs. "You embarrassed her in front of Mike." I send a hurt and angry look towards him. We were close friends. "I'm going to look for them." I prevent myself from tripping as I start to walk out, but my wrist is grabbed. "You can't do that. Your drunk and could get hurt." Mike says with concern. "Wow, I guess Hannah and Beth are expendable then." I growl, yanking my hand back. "I didn't mean-" "Just shut up Mike, I can't believe you." I grumble, running into the woods after them.
I'm not very coordinated because alcohol, but I follow the footsteps. After a following the footsteps I hear shouts. "Hannah! Beth!" I shout. I sprint the best I can towards the noise, coming to a cliff. I see a man standing at the edge. And I hear shouts. "Beth! Hannah!" I call. There's no response. The mysterious man, looks at me. "What did you do to them?" I sob. "I tried to help them. I was too late. You'd better get back before too long." And the man leave. I look over the edge, hoping it's a prank, but at the bottom I see a trail of blood. No....no, no, no, oh god no, please, no! I vomit in some bushes. If I had gotten here a moment earlier. In denial, deciding that the blood was from animals, I keep looking. I'm out for so long my fingers lose feeling. I didn't exactly grab my coat. I had long sleeves, but that wouldn't do much. I decide to turn back to the lodge, hoping they had found their way back. I only take a few steps before I hear a screeching noise that makes me thing of Jurassic Park. Except really close.
I start running in fear, praying that it was just a bobcat or something that's more afraid of me then I am of it. I don't look back, but I'm pretty sure it's chasing me. I run as fast as I can, my breath in front of me coming so fast in blocks my vision. Still not coordinated, I trip over a root, and hit my head on a rock. I don't move once I fall, hoping that whatever it is will move on. I hear a few crunches in the snow, then a rustle or leaves. I lay here for a few more minutes before getting back up. Tears are frozen to my cheeks, and blood drips from a small cut from the rock. I run back to the lodge, busting into the door. Everyone looks at me anxiously. "Please..." I sob. "Tell me they came back. Tell me they came back!" I sob, sinking to my knees, knowing that they were gone,
