"(Y/n)!" Ashley perks up, wrapping me in a hug. "Hey Ash." "It's been so long." "Yeah. I know." "I was worried you wouldn't come. After last year, I-" "Can we not?" I groan. She just nods, biting her lip. Since she was so close to Chris, it was only natural for her to side with me in the silent argument. "Hey." I say to Matt, who waves with a small smile. Josh and Chris come up behind us. "Hey gang. You guys get up here okay?" Josh asks. "Yeah it was pretty easy... a little creepy though... I mean, it's just really weird being back here." Ashley says. "Sam and I walked together, so we were okay." I say. Josh and I share a look. His eyes hold a certain anger that I want to shrink away from. However he just smiles politely, and waves.
"Yo yo yo! Are we gonna get things moving up here or what?" Chris says. "Yeah man!" Josh claps his hands happily. They go up to the door to try and unlock it, but it's frozen, so they go to the side of the house to look for something to help. "So Ash... what do you think of my brother?" He face reddens, but not from the cold. "Well, I-I..." I wink at her. "Don't worry, I won't tell him." "Ugh, I wish you had a crush I could bug you about." "Right..." I say. She gives me a confused look. "So you do...?" I smile and shake my head. "That's for me to know and for you to never find out." "Oh please tell me, please, please, please." "You just told me you wanted to bug me about it." I laugh. She laughs too. "Fair."
The pair comes back, using a homemade flamethrower on the lock. I nearly flinch at the flame. I'm terrified of being burned. I'm not sure why, I just am. "Nice going guys." I compliment. An animal runs out of the door, scaring Chris. "EEEK! Jeez!" He sighs. Sam, Ash, and I laugh. "Crap that thing freaked me out." He mumbles. "What was it? Are you okay?" Ashley asks. I nudge her. "It was like a bear or tiger or something." Chris says. "Aw it was just a cute little baby wolverine!" Sam reassures. "Baby?" Chris asks. "Don't worry buddy, you're gonna be a big boy soon." Josh jokes. We laugh as we enter the house. "Home sweet home." Josh says. "Sweet isn't the word I would use." Matt inputs. "It's so good to be in here, even if it is kinda freezing." Ashley says. "I'll get a fire going." Josh replies. "It looks the same." I notice. "Nobody's been up here." Josh says. "Even with all the police coming in and out?" Ashley asks. I shudder a little as I go to the couch, throwing my bag on it. "Hey Chris, did you see Mike at all? He was with you when we left." I ask him quietly. "Yeah, I think he stayed behind for a moment." I nod. Not even two seconds later Mike and Jess walk in.
"What's up, party people?" Mike cheers. "Heyyy!" Jess says. "Make yourself at home, bro." Josh greets. Jess sits in a chair near the fireplace. "Yeah. Come on in. Take a load off. Have whatever you want. You just take whatever you want anyways, right?" Matt huffs. I tilt my head. The hell is he mad about? "Woah, easy there, cowboy." "What the hell were you doing with Em out on the trail, huh?" Matt asks harshly. He was with Emily? "What?" "I saw you and Em. Through the telescope." Matt accuses. "We just ran into each other. It'd been a while so we hugged and I said hello. Is that against the law?" I guess if they were just hugging... "Right... yeah... Duh. Sorry, it's been kind of a long day. I overreacted." Matt backs off. "Nah, man, don't worry about it." "We cool?" "Yeah, yeah. Totally." Now that the skirmish has ended, they both sit down. Mike sits on the couch near me.
"So Em, huh?" I whisper in a joking tone. "Not in the slightest." He replies. I can't help but feel a bit happier after that. "How are you feeling about being back? I mean-" "Oh my god, can everyone stop asking me that?" I hiss. A few people give us a passing glance, but no one really heard. "Sorry." He says. "It's fine." I sigh. "Well, let's just try to have fun, huh?" He smiles and ruffles my hair. "Goddammit, Mike!" I laugh, despite wanting to hold it in. Just then Emily walks in. "Oh. My god. Could your laugh be anymore annoying? Like did you get lessons from hyenas?" Emily and I never got along. She was always a major bitch, but she seems to really have it out for me. "At least I'm capable of having feelings other then being a nasty bitch." I say flatly, not really intending her to hear. But she does. "Excuse me, did you say something?" She asks. I roll my eyes. "Not like it concerns you." She huffs angrily. "Whatever. But seriously, if your going to try and get in his pants, at least do it somewhere away from here." She hisses. "Em..." Matt starts.
"How was that at all flirting? Is everything about sex to you? Maybe you should see someone about sex addiction." I retort, standing up now. I don't like fights, and never start them, but I will finish them. "You try to act like miss perfect, but we all know that your a screwed up bitch." She growls. "That's it!" I shout, the comment striking a nerve. I go to lunge at her, but I'm grabbed by the waist. By Mike. Matt grabs Emily. We struggle to break from their grips, but the two are strong. Apparently they don't want us to rip each other's throats out. "STOP IT! This is not why we came up here. This is not... helping. It's not what I wanted. If we can't get along for ten minutes then maybe we need a little bit of a break, right?" Josh says, standing. I stop, feeling guilty as always, and Mike lets go. Everyone seems a little on edge. Maybe it's because I'm around.
Emily walks up to her luggage, the fight forgotten. "Where's my bag?" Her shrill voice asks. "Huh?" "My bag! The little bag with the pink pattern! The one I got on Rodeo! Matt are you listening? Oh my god, don't you remember? Next to the Italian shoe place where I got the stilettos and you knocked over the rack while you were drooling all over that girl at the counter?" "Well, I mean, she was asking about my letter jacket-" "Right. Because she gave a shit about your "designer" letter jacket." "Why do you hate my jacket?" "MATT I need my bag!" "Oh my god Em, maybe you just forgot it-" "Do you seriously think I'd forget my bag? Do you?" I rub my temple in annoyance. "Guess not." Matt concedes. "You must have left it down by the cable car station. C'mon hun. We'll be back soon." "And then we can get warm?" "We can get very warm." "Okay. Okay. Let's go." Matt points towards the exit, and the couple leave. Finally.
"Alright... I'm gonna go take a bath." Sam announces. "Sounds nice." I respond. I look over at Ashley and Chris talking in a corner. "So, should we get this fire going, Josh?" Mike asks. "Sure. I need to look for a lighter or something. Can you take someone with you to get firewood?" Mike nods, then looks to me. But then Jess has to open her big mouth. "I'll go. I really want to get out of this house." She says, but she says it with a motive. Bitch can fight me! "Um, right. Sure. Let's go." Mike says awkwardly. They leave the house. "Alright, peanut gallery, you know what? I got an idea for you two." Josh says to Ashley and Chris. I smirk, knowing what he is doing. "What?"
"Okay well I am pretty sure that somewhere in this crazy place we used to have... a spirit board." Josh says, trying to be funny. "Wait are you saying... we should have a seance?" Ashley asks, spooked. "Those things are a joke, man. They don't do shit." Chris reassures her. "No way bro. We used to do it all the time. Me and..." He stops, and Sam walks down the stairs. "Hey Josh. No hot water's kinda major oversight dontcha think?" She asks. "Yeah yeah, just gotta fire up the boiler. It's in the basement. You guys see if you can find the spirit board." Josh instructs. "Chris, let's go find it! It'll be like a scavenger hunt!" Ash says excitedly. "Ummm... okay... guess so." They walk off. "Okay, well you two have fun with the boiler. I'm going to go lay down for a bit." I say. "Still getting those headaches?" Sam asks. I nod. "Aspirin helps, but I just need a rest, ya know?" She nods. "Good luck, guys."
I walk up the stairs and find a nice room. I throw my bag on one side of the bed, the lay in the other. I can't help but think about Jess and Mike might be doing out there. Ugh... I need to stop. I think about Hannah and Beth. I miss you guys... and I drift off to sleep.
