BEEP-BEEP-BEEP
Richie's hazel eyes opened wide and looked at his black alarm clock, which was currently screaming at him to get out of bed. He hoisted himself out of bed, fearful of what the day would hold. He walked over to his closet and whipped out black ripped jeans and a Nirvana shirt. He went into the bathroom and brushed his teeth, checking his curls in the mirror. He pointed finger guns cheesily at himself, "alright Rich, come on, you've got this, they're gonna love you." He smiled sadly at the nickname. It had been given to him by Jonny, a kid he used to babysit before he moved. He shook this thought out of his head and walked downstairs. His mom was up and ready to go to work. She had made Richie breakfast, but Richie refused, (he was too nervous to eat) and after some small talk with his mom, he gave her a hug, grabbed his navy blue backpack that was studded with pins, and walked out the front door. During the talk with his mother, she had given his directions to his new school. He lived less than a mile away, so Richie figured he could walk.
You're gonna be lonely. You're gonna be a loser. Nothing is going to change. A small voice spoke in the back of his mind.
Before he could delve any deeper into this thought, a somewhat chubby boy started jogging towards him. The guy looked to be about the same age as Richie. He was wearing a brown t-shirt and blue jeans, his dirty white slip on vans smacking against the pavement as he walked. The kid shoved his dirty blonde hair out of his face as his neared Richie, or as his mom had told him, "the new kid." Ben was 15, the same age as Richie, and was one of the kindest kids in all of Derry.
"Hey, you're the new kid, right?" Ben said, a nervous grin plastered to his face. Richie let out a chuckle and replied,
"Yeah, uh, that would be me. I'm Richie, Richie Tozier. And you are?"
"Ben Hanscom." The boy said.
The two chatted as they walked up the front steps to Derry High.
"So, what's your first period Tozier?" Ben questioned.
"English, what about you Haystack?" Richie paused as a thought slammed into his head,
Great going moron, now you're gonna lose your only maybe-friend by giving him one of your stupid nicknames.
Much to his astonishment, Ben just laughed and said, "No shit really? Same!"
Richie smiled a relieved grin as Ben walked him through the halls, showing him the locations of the rest of Richies classes. After Ben and Richie chose their seats, Ms.Hall introduced Richie to the class and started her lesson. The time passed slowly as Ms.Hall drilled on with her lesson. When the class was over, Ben waved Richie goodbye and told him to meet him outside the lunchroom before lunch started. Richie agreed and started walking to his science class. While he walked through the hall covered in Derry High posters, he heard a small voice speak just around the corner that made him stop in his tracks.
