boys don't cry- the cure

mike hadn't seen el the whole summer, since she left for sleep away camp in the beginning of june. she hadn't written him a single letter or even sent a postcard like she promised. sometimes     he wondered if she had found some new boy at camp and just forgotten about him. he had told her he loved her and she said it back, but maybe that didn't count for anything. after all, they were just two 14 year olds.

tomorrow was supposed to be the day she came back, but he had to go visit his grandma that day, and wouldn't get to see her. he knew that this shouldn't be such a big deal, but the loneliness began to gnaw at his insides.

he dragged himself out of the house and trudged in the humid summer air to hopper's cabin, to sit in the patch of forest that they usually hung out in. as he sat on a log and played with some fallen leaves, he felt his face heat up and tears began to flow uncontrollably down his cheeks. he remembered his dad always telling him that "boys shouldn't cry", but he couldn't stop himself.

after a while, he heard a small voice behind him calling his name. as the figure got closer, he realized it was el, in a yellow sundress he'd never seen before, looking beautiful as ever. "mike..." before he knew it, her lanky arms were wrapped around his back, pulling him closer. "el, i thought you weren't coming back for a while," mike said confusedly. "i just missed you a lot, mike, and i was pretty lonely at camp, so i asked hopper if i could come home a day early."

as she noticed the dried tears on her beloved boy's face, she realized something important. this whole time she thought mike would've forgotten about her, and found a new girl. turns out, he was just as lonely as she was. they didn't need to say anything, because each could feel exactly what the other was feeling.

after a few minutes of staring into each other's eyes, mike and eleven joined lips for the first time in what felt like eternity. the birds quieted and the trees swayed softly, as the sunshine drizzled on the two gently rekindling their romance.
