This is gonna continue the flashback we had in the last chapter—✰
'It started on a typical gloomy Gotham day. Although it didn't rlly end so typical...'
The school bell had rang meaning hell was finally over. I wasn't the popular type at school. I talked to people but not enough to officially call them a friend. I didn't care though,I had the greatest best friend and that's all that mattered.
I walked out of the school seeing a rush of students trying to get home. Some were getting on buses and other ones were picked up by their parents, the lucky ones were able to drive their own car home. I didn't have any of those. My mom worked many shifts not leaving her any free time to pick me up. And I preferred to walk the dangerous streets of Gotham than ride the bus with a bunch of dumbasses.
As I began my long journey home, I felt a water drop on my arm...great I didn't even bring an umbrella.
I let out a small sigh only loud enough for me to hear and began walking a little faster than before.I had been walking in the rain for a while when I started to get a bad feeling. The feeling of being followed. I stopped and turned around to see nothing but the empty streets.
Weird... Gotham was usually filled with busy people and the chaos of people's whereabouts. I didn't think much of it as soon as I felt the rain get heavier.
Not long after, I spotted a van suspiciously start to catch up with me. The van slowed down and started to follow the speed of my walk. My heart began to pound in my chest. Of course living in Gotham I had prepared myself for situations like this. I had been lucky enough to avoid them but once it was actually happening, my mind had gone blank.
I was gonna die, this was it... My mind was telling me different things all at once
run... yell... ignore it...
All of those thoughts disappear as soon as the van sped up in front of me and stopped. There was no where else I could go but keep walking forward.
As soon as I caught up to the van, the dark tinted windows started to roll down.
"Hey you uh need a ride?" The man inside the van said with a husky voice. I just stood there staring at the man with a blank face. I snapped out of my trance and checked the time on my phone. 5:45pm... it was pretty late and I didn't want my mom to worry about me
like she would even notice I'm gone...
"I'm alright... my house is not that far. Thank you though." As soon as I said I mentally scolded myself. Great... now this stranger could easily follow you and find out where you live.
"You know... the rain is only gonna get heavier, so if I uh were you, I would take my kind offer." The man said with a cheeky smile. He was right. I was guaranteed to get a cold if I continued to walk in the rain any longer. I opened the passenger door and got in the van. When I slammed the van door closed, I heard a click and the door locked. A small part of me started to panic while the other tried to reason with me.I shared some awkward silence with the man in the van. We just sat there without saying a word or looking at each other. I began to shiver a little bit not only because of fear but by the fact that i had been walking the cold rainy streets of Gotham for the past 20 minutes.
Finally the man spoke, "you um cold?"
While I shook my head as a response still not looking at him. He handed me a purple coat. Without questions I took it, covering myself with it's warmth. I was able to mumble a weak 'thank you' through my shivers.
The van finally started to move and the man asked me for directions.
I started to feel more comfortable and became less tense. I had found comfort in the purple coat. It looked so familiar but I couldn't quite wrap my head around it. It had a particular smell...
I had picked up the scent of
gasoline... smoke...gunpowder.
Although the coat had an unusual scent, I had grown to like it.
Before I knew it, i was parked outside of my house. The parking spot was empty meaning my mom had already left for her night shift. I was surprised i actually made it home and wasn't on the news with big red missing alerts. I turned in my seat to finally face the man who had drove me home.
"Thank you for driving me home..." I said with a gently smile. I was hoping for 'you're welcome' back but the stranger didn't say anything and the door's to the van unlocked. I reached for the door handle but the man finally spoke.
"Um I never caught your name." He said with curious expression. I hesitated but responded.
"It's Melanie..." i responded a little weaker than I intended.
"melanie..." The man whispered to himself as if he was trying to get use to saying the name.
I ignored it and began to get out of the van leaving the purple coat in the passenger seat.
"Wait! Don't you wanna know my name?" The man spoke quickly as if he didn't have time. I smiled in approval.
"I'm jo-...I'm J" he said. My smile had quickly turned into a frown. That wasn't his real name or at least not his full name. I shook that thought off and slammed the van door. I walked to my house's front door slightly reaching in my backpack to pull the keys out. I made sure to glance behind me at the van that was still parked outside my house. I managed to open the door and lock it.
I ran to my window to see if the van was still there but there was no longer any trace of it.I turned on the tv for background noise as I made my way into the bathroom. I turned the water to as warm as it could get. I had been freezing from the rain and a warm shower sounded great.
I let the boiling water hit my skin sending a few chills down my body. I let myself relax but I knew that my head was still crowded with thoughts of my strange encounter with "J" yet, still pleasing ones...
As soon as I was done with my shower, I changed into some baggy sweatpants and a large t-shirt. I went to the living room to see the tv still on as I had left it. The news channel was on and I was tempted to change it. I believed that the news loved to twist and exaggerate stories to make them more interesting. Or that they made up crazy stories to bring fear into Gotham's residents. Although no one could deny Gotham was a crazy dangerous place.
"The infamous joker is on the loose!" The news reporter said. No wonder the streets were so empty... everyone was hiding from that thug.
"We recommend that residents avoid making unnecessary trips and stay in the safety of their homes."
I had been walking the Gotham streets alone and not to mention taking rides from strangers maybe I should start watching the news more often. The news began to show different pictures of the joker. He looked so familiar...dark eyes, messy hair, intense smile. I began to get stupid ideas about who the joker was but I doubted that joker was the type of guy to go around giving random people lift's because of a storm. That night falling asleep was more difficult. My head was crowded with more overthinking than usual. Who was that man and why did he insist on giving me a ride? Now he knows where I live! I could've been easily kidnapped. It didn't help that I was all alone and who knows when my mom would be back.
But for some odd reason I still desired to see him again. I had to see him again.
The rain continued to pore down creating a peaceful melody. It followed a constant pattern of sounds and somehow was able to put me to sleep.—✰
This chapter was wayyy longer than the last one. I'll try to continue making them this long. Srry if there's any grammar mistakes but I'm writing this at midnight and tried my best to revise it.
