Twelve years ago...

Brenna Reilly stood on the sidewalk outside the Onset Village Market. She shifted from foot to foot as she straddled her bike. Her best friend, Ashley was inside buying a pack of gum. At least that was her excuse. Ashley's parents let her drive her Honda CRV from Sherborn to stay with Brenna and her family at their cottage for the week. Not her Dad, he only came down on days off and vacations, but her brother and sister and mother. There was always an extra kid at the Reilly cottage and this week it was Ashley.

They had spent the afternoon on the beach and needed to ride their bikes back to the cottage to shower before dinner. Meanwhile, Ashley was in the store flirting with the cute guy she had seen behind the counter three days before. She never stopped talking about how she was in love with him. Brenna didn't know much about love, but two encounters at the checkout register wasn't it. When Ashley came out of the store smiling, Brenna knew she would have to hear more about him for the rest of the week.

By the time she reached the bikes, she was jumping up and down. "He told me about a party tonight in Falmouth on the beach. We have to go!"

"My mother isn't going to let us go to a beach party!"

"I can drive. We don't have to stay late. It'll be fun."

"Do you even know his name?" Brenna didn't think it was a good idea.

"Jay. He said it would be cool if I came. I told him we'd pick him up here."

"Cool? He's probably using you for a ride."

Ashley shrugged. "More time to get him to fall in love with me."

Her mother always wanted to know where she was going. They had graduated high school, but her birthday wasn't until the end of August. Ashley had been eighteen since January.

"Oh no, doesn't Abigail have a house in Falmouth?" Ashley wrinkled her nose.

Abigail was in school with them, but the girls found her annoying.

"My mother doesn't like Abigail's mother. It started after they ran a bake sale together."

"I've got it! We'll tell your mother we're going to see Abigail. She won't check, because she hates her mom."

"I don't know. We need to get home. It's almost dinnertime."

Brenna turned her bike, and they pedaled down Onset Avenue and across the Old Stonebridge. By the time they parked their bikes, even Aidan was home. Her younger brother had a bunch of summer friends he roamed with.

The house smelled delicious. Brenna called out. "Mia, what d'you make?"

"Toll House." Aidan's favorite. Brenna's favorites were peanut butter cookies. Her little sister loved to bake and was good at it considering she was only thirteen.
