She was younger than her years then Still taking baby steps in her heels Searching for the hand to hold her steady He wasn’t ready His days were spent feeding birds in the street Seeking words from the weak Looking for a god who wasn’t there They met in an alley Two strangers sharing a lighter and a smoke Speaking of mundane things like the snow Comparing the prices of bread Smiling slyly at the stolen looks Hoping their lust wouldn’t be so easily read Hoping for a miracle from heaven She was lonely Lost There were holes in her skin Letting the drab grey rain in What she wanted was adventure Was attention All she ever wanted was affection He was a guest in his own life Startled at the slightest sound of fluttering wings From the birds he loved and cared little for He was forever hiding from himself Refusing to lie in his bed In the one he had made A rebel She saw him as a chance As a way to have that one in a lifetime dance He wanted a friend He called her his Victory She let him They fell together like broken glass or sand Fitting so perfectly in a way that had him crying She was so defying So bitter Their love was never there Never real Because they were strangers who fell in the same bed In the world where impossible didn’t happen They wanted manna from heaven A word from the universe She wanted it to all be chaos He found comfort in the knowledge of a plan They were just strangers Whispering words of consolation Exchanging kisses and bites Marking each other for life It was the chance of a lifetime They let it go She was too young for her years He was too broken for tears There was peace in giving up all the hope in the world There was hope
