Stars are becoming more visible. The holy red and soft orange sunset are slowly leaving. I pace around the fence side, glancing occasionally to see if anyone is coming. I look toward the sky and see the moon is out already. I keep making nervous sideways glances, not to miss anything. I lean against the 5ft fence and look at the cattle and the amazing tall stalks of corn, where the workers are harvesting the produce.
"Looking sharp, Charlie," a husky voice pats me on the back as he climbs the fence and sits on the top of it.
"Hey John, Mona," Mona glances at her watch before she nods acknowledging me. I wait for them to say something, while I glance behind Mona making sure I didn't miss anything.
"Where's Ally?" I ask John.
"Oh she's coming, she said she had to do some before coming," John glances at his wristwatch.
"Miss me?" a thick voice teases. I turn and feel an arm wrap around me.
"He was pretty much sulking because you weren't here," John sarcastically teases. Without helping it, I blush.
"Come on let's go, we're already late," Mona pushes us from behind to start moving.
The night is bold and the star blooms dramatically across the sky. We approach blasting music and the lantern lights. Upon entering, we passed the State Fair sign that has been decorated with balloons and ribbons.
"Hey, Mona, Moores, and Charlie. How are ya'll doing?" An old man with a beer in his hand greets us.
"We're doing alright, Mr. Bill," I tip my hat to greet him.
A blond girl rushes toward John, giggling uncontrollably.
"Howdy, Ms. Hoxie?" John flashes her a mischievous grin.
"Why just call me Amanda? Would you like to dance?" Amanda gestures toward the dance floor. John turns to us, before going to the dance floor," I'm out. have fun kids."
Mona scoffs and turns to us, "How are we kids? He's only 4 years older than us."
Ally Chuckles a bit, "You know him, he thinks he's superior by being 20. Legal to vote but not to drink. Come on, let's find a pub table."
We find a table away from the dance floor, where there was lantern light hanging from the top of the dance floor. It not long before Mona gets invited to dance.
"Has your mom cooked anything traditional lately?" Ally asks dipping some fries into the ketchup sauce.
I think about it for a few moments, before answering, "She's actually been working on this recipe called plant pie plant, which is a pie made with rhubarb. She claims it's the best pie. But I honestly taste like any other apple pie."
Ally laughs loudly, " She is an amazing cook, give her credit."
We spend the rest of the time talking about school and my farm's baby animals before John comes by looking stressed.
"Guys we need to go Now," John demands while nervously glancing sideways.
"What why?" Ally asks taken aback.
"It's Lavender. She saw me dancing with Amanda and she started to chase me, but she's now bickering with Amanda," He keeps glancing sideways.
"So, you ran for it?" I ask confused.
"I tried stopping them but who knew that girls could be so savage," he said rushy.
"I thought you broke up with lavender weeks ago?" I ask still confused.
"I did but she needs to get a grip." He looks at Ally, "Come on, we need to go anyway it's almost midnight."
"Ok, ok Let me just go get Mona. I'll be back." Ally heads toward the other side of the pub tables.
John sits down stiffly on Ally's seat, " Is this Ally's?"
I nod. He drinks the rest of the Coke left on the cup before blurting out," Have you asked out my sister, yet?"
I choke on my drink. I open my mouth, but no words come out.
"Chill man. I really don't mind; we've been friends for a long time. I don't mind you looking at her, but you need to really stop drooling all over her all the time. And, you need to get your life together, or someone else might come along." Before I could think of something to say, John gets up as Lavender appears. He drags me to the entrance of the fair, where Ally and Mona are waiting.
"Let's go," he says.
Straight ahead of Ally and me, Mona and John bickering. The sound of crickets fills the air, with a nice moonlight guiding us to the main road.
"Hope you learned your lesson." Mona seems amused.
"And what would that be? That I am charming?" John flashes her a smile.
Mona laughs sarcastically, "Very funny John, we should have just left you for lavender and Amanda to find you."
"Oh, come on Mona. I broke up with lavender weeks ago. What right does she have to tell me which girl can like me?" John and Mona continue to bicker.
We arrive at the main road where we met earlier today. Ally drags John away from Mona, who is going left.
"Hey Ally, meet me tomorrow?" I call out before she leaves.
She stops "Sure, thing cowboy, wouldn't miss it for the world." She waves and turns to catch up with her brother.

My hands are sweaty. Can't seem to pace my breathing. I am having a hard time swallowing. I walk a bit and think, thinking of the words I want to say before I don't see my best friend again. I am going to be a senior in high soon, but even a senior I don't feel brave nor mature enough for this moment. I am nervous. Nervous but excited. I don't know if I am doing things to have an answer or if I am expecting an answer. I just don't want to leave any regrets.
Sitting on the ground where the old willow tree is, the weather is nice. Not humid, but rather sunny and warm.
"Boo," a thick voice successfully scares me. "Howdy, there?" the voice flops next to me and crosses her legs.
I sigh, "You know, I wish time could stop."
She stretches out her legs. I notice she is wearing her white boots again, she leans back a bit, "Life is life, you gotta keep on going."
I mumble a yeah.
"I promise, I'll miss you," she chuckles a bit. "Are you going to miss me?" she teases.
"You have no idea," I let out a sigh.
I take my hands out of her sight and fidget with a nearby branch. I know what I must do, or else I won't do it. I let out a heavy sigh," I'm afraid that you will leave and forget about me. And when you do see me again, you'll ignore me. I'm afraid that you'll forget me."
She sighs, "Charlie, you're my best friend, I love talking to you, laughing, even sitting silently doing nothing. No matter how far we are from each other, I will come to you. I will keep coming back, even if you get tired of me. I promise."
"Then can I ask you something else?"
