"Oh, come on, stop changing it!" Peter exclaimed in exasperation as MJ switched the music they were listening to, again.
"This is ten thousand times better than what you had on," MJ said, taking a seat next to Peter on his bed. She leaned into him and he put an arm around his girlfriend.
"Is not," he muttered, earning a punch in the chest from MJ. "Ow! What was that for?"
"You know what." MJ laughed, then pulled his face towards hers, shutting him up before he could start talking again.
"PETER, COME HERE!" Aunt May's voice yelled from elsewhere in the apartment.
"Oh, come on," Peter groaned. "Is there like, a secret aunt sense for when your Peter finally gets some action?"
MJ laughed as Peter got up slowly, leaning down to give her another quick kiss before exiting his room.
"Aunt May, I swear, if this isn't an emergency-" Peter started as he neared the living room, but stopped when he saw there was a man there that he didn't recognise. "Uh, hi." He turned to Aunt May, seated opposite the man on the sofa "What's going on?"
"Good evening, Peter," the man said, getting to his feet and holding out a hand that Peter shook automatically. "My names Fred. Fred Andrews."
"Peter," Aunt May said softly. "I think you should sit down. Fred has something important to ask but there's also... He was a friend of your mother's."
"My mother?" Peter said, shocked. They seldom talked about his parents, let alone had visitors claiming to have known them.
"You know that your dad was from around here," Fred said, sitting down again as Peter did the same. "But your mother was from Riverdale before she lived away to be with him. That's my town."
Peter frowned. "I've never even heard of Riverdale."
"Your mothers life wasn't always easy. Even if she... If she was still around, I doubt she would have mentioned it."
"What do you mean?" Peter asked, glancing at Aunt May. Did she know about this?
"Riverdale has a history of gangs," Fred said after a moments hesitation. "Your mother was very involved in one. Some of them aren't so bad, but the one your mother was in, The Spiders, they were plain evil." Fred sighed, running a hand over his beard. "We were in high school together. But then one day she didn't show. Months later, her cousin Alice, who was in a different gang at the time, told us she'd run off with your dad who'd been passing through town. That was the only way she could think of to get away and free of The Spiders."
"So my mum was in a gang. Called The Spiders," Peter said slowly. "Hey, that's kinda cool."
"Not the gang she was in," Fred said. "Like I said, they were just evil. They didn't have any sort of... Code the way The Serpents do. Thats the gang at the moment. Good guys, too. No, The Spiders just destroyed everything in their path. They didn't care who they hurt or what damage they caused. The more the better."
"Doesn't sound fun," Peter said, unsure why this man had come all the way from Riverdale to tell him about a gang his mother had been in.
"A bunch of their leaders were put away when they were responsible for some deaths not long after you mum left," Fred carried on. "The gang kind of dissipated. The members that were left were run out of town by The Serpents."
"Why are your gangs all named after animals?" Peter mused. "I mean, I know a spider is not technically an animal, but like-"
"Peter, stop," Aunt May said, fighting a smile. She glanced at Fred. "I'm going to fetch us some drinks. Please, behave?" She said the last part to Peter rather emploringly.
"When do I not?" Peter said innocently. Aunt May laughed and left the room. The moment she had, Feed leaned forward in his seat, worry all over his face.
"Peter, The Spiders are back. More of them than ever. They've taken over the town and no one has the power to do anything. The serpents are able to keep them in control. But only just. We can't keep going like this for long."
Peter frowned, confused. "That's terrible. But, uh, why are you telling me? What abotlut the police?"
Fred sighed. "Let's just say we don't really want the police digging around our town. But Peter, I know what you can do." He lowered his voice. "I know you're Spiderman."
Peter blinked at him as the realisation dawned. "Aw, come on, man. Things have just gotten back to normal. Aunt May is finally letting me have my door shut while I'm in there with my girl. I-I have homework!"
"Peter, we need you. Everything is falling apart. People are scared to step outside."
"I'm still in school!"
"And look what you've already achieved! This should be nothing after saving the world. You'll be back in no time."
Peter sighed, running a hand through his unruly hair. "Can I think about it? And I'll- I'll give you a call when I've made up my mind."
"Of course," Fred said, smiling as he got to feet. "Thank you for considering it, Peter. If you decide to come, you'll be able to stay with my son and I. He's about your age."
"Thanks, Mr Andrews," Peter said, shaking the man's hand again. Fred handed him a card that read 'Andrews Construction' and gave him one last smile.
"Your mother would be proud of you."
Peter could only nod in response, watching the front door close behind Mr Andrews as Aunt May entered with three glasses of juice.
"Wait, did he leave?" She asked, looking around like he might jump out from behind the sofa at any moment. "And I just got drinks!"
"Algood, I'll take one for MJ." Peter grinned and grabbed two of the glasses, rushing back towards his bedroom.
"Leave the door open!"
