Peter was up before anyone else the next morning, but immediately found himself facing the same issue anyone, even Spiderman, faces upon waking up in somebody else's home before them.
He didn't know what to do, so after readying himself for school and pacing Jugheads room for a while, he simply sat back down on his bed and waited.
"You up?" Betty's familiar voice asked after a soft knock on the door.
"Yes, I'm up," Peter said, bounding to his feet a little too quickly as Betty poked her head around the door.
"I made some toast if you want to eat," Betty said. "And you and me are gonna ride to school with Archie. Jughead is kind of enforcing a new plan now, so I'll explain on the way."
Peter nodded, wondering what the new plan was as he followed Betty down to the kitchen. Only Mr Jones was there, dressed in his sheriffs uniform and gulping down a coffee.
"See you kids later," he said, dropping his mug rather roughly into the sink and walking quickly out of the house.
Betty sighed. "Like father, like son. Neither one ever does any dishes."
Peter chuckled and took a seat. "What's up with the living situation, by the way?" He asked, taking a bite of the toast Betty pushed across to him. He noticed that she wasn't eating anything.
"Oh, uh, that." Betty laughed. "Well, it's a bit of a long story. My mum sold the house, Jugheads mum bought it and their family moved in, then his mum left and my mum and Mr Jones got together and now it kind of just works."
"Isn't that weird, though?" Peter asked, finishing the last few mouthfuls of toast. "Your parents being together, I mean."
"Trust me, if you live around here, that would not seem weird."
"This place just gets better and better," Peter said, his tone sarcastic.
"Some pretty crazy stuff happens," Betty sighed. "But just with this family, and not including the stuff about my dad because I don't want to scare you off, I have an older half brother that is also Jugheads half brother because our parents were together in high school. Oh, and we found out that my older sisters boyfriend a few years back, who was murdered by the way, is our cousin. Need I go on?"
Peter shook his head slowly, taking in what she had said and trying to think of an appropriate response. "Man it must be weird to be you."
Betty laughed. "That's not even the worst of it."
Peter was saved from having to answer by Betty's phone ringing. She picked up quickly and Peter could just make out Archie's voice speaking from the phone.
"Right, let's go," Betty said, "Archie's waiting."

Peter sat in the backseat of Archie's car and couldn't help but wonder where Jughead was as they pulled out onto the road.
"Okay, so the plan I'm meant to be informing you of," Betty said, turning so that she could talk to Peter properly from the front seat. "I'm not a big fan of this, but Jug insisted, so I guess it's what we're going with. Basically, he wants the spiders to think that we've broken up so that they will hopefully stop targeting me, which I think is a pretty dumb way to go about it but he has his mind made up and I guess there's no harm in trying."
"It's not like you guys are actually broken up or anything," Archie said. Betty nodded.
"Yeah," she continued. "So, basically we're going to attempt to spread the word, subtly, that we've broken up, with only a few people knowing its fake."
"What if the spiders just assume he broke up with you to keep you safe? They'll still come after you because it'll show how much he cares about you," Peter said, frowning.
"This is the part that I really don't like," Betty said with a sigh. "We're basically going to say that I was cheating on him like, the whole time. And I think we're also saying Jug cheated on me a bunch of times. Which also needs to be spread around so that they think we never really loved each other."
"We'd better hope they believe it." Archie sighed.
"I hate the idea of even being pretend broken up with him." Betty sighed, slumping down in her seat.
"He just wants to keep you safe, Betty," Archie said. "Even if that means not seeing much of each other until we get the spiders sorted, don't you think it will be worth it?"
Betty didn't answer for a moment. "Not if they don't believe it."

When they arrived at Riverdale high, Betty walked Peter down to the office, though she seemed far more subdued than Peter had seen her yet.
"You okay?" He asked as they stopped outside the office.
Betty nodded, smiling sadly. "I just-"
"Oh cousin Betty!" Peter was pushed aside as a fiery redhead flew past him to embrace Betty tightly. "I just heard about you and Jughead. Is it true he's been cheating on you? And you on him?"
Betty swallowed hard. "It's true," she said softly, allowing the redhead to take her hands. "We fought for so long last night when we both confessed... But I still loved him. I just don't think-" Betty paused lifting a hand to her face to wipe away actual tears. Peter marveled at her acting skilled. "I don't think he ever really loved me."
The redhead once again pulled Betty into a tight hug, releasing her only to offer her a tissue which Betty used to wipe her eyes and blow her nose. If Peter didn't know the truth, he really would have believed she was crying.
"Who's this grub?" The redhead asked, looking over at Peter.
"A family friend," Betty said between sniffles. "He's staying with us for a while." She motioned to the redhead. "Peter, this is Cheryl."
"Okay, toodles," Cheryl said, waving at Peter before turning back to Betty. "Don't feel bad, cousin. I always knew that trailer park ruffian wasn't good enough for you."
Peter zoned out to her voice and the sound of Betty's incredibly realistic fake crying as he entered the office, making his way over to the desk.
"Uh, hi," he said.
"Can I help you?" The elderly woman seated on the other side of the desk asked.
"I'm Peter Parker," Peter said. "I'm a transfer. It's my first day today."
"Peter Parker..." The woman said slowly, typing the name into a computer. She turned to shuffle through some papers, pulling out a few and placing them in front of Peter.
"Here are your classes, and your locker number and combination. Do I need to remind you not to show anyone?"
"Of course not." Peter grinned, taking the papers and making his way back out of the office, making a mental note to thank Happy for getting this all done so quickly. Betty and Cheryl had disappeared and the halls had filled with people.
Peter had faced a lot in his time watching Spiderman, but a new school and so many unfamiliar faces made him considerably more nervous than, say, being in space had done. At least you until he realised he was going to die; that was pretty nerve racking.
"You look new."
Peter stopped walking, turning to look at the figure that had suddenly appeared beside him. "Uh, yeah, I am," he said, wondering why the boy looked so familiar. "I'm Peter."
"Casey," the boy said, flipping his too long blonde hair out of his eyes and offering a hand to shake. "I'm fairly new too. Thought I might snap you up before everyone else does."
Peter laughed nervously, unsure how to respond.
"Where's your locker?" Casey asked, starting down the corridor again at a brisk walk.
"Uh," Peter looked down at the paper the office lady had given him. "284?"
"I'm 283!" Casey exclaimed. "Guess they're sticking us newbies together." He laughed, but Peter couldn't seem to relax. Something about this boy seemed wrong, but he couldn't quite place what the issue was.
