Trigger warning: this story talks about death, gore, and violence, so, uh... yeah.

Taking a deep breath, he pushed his hand through his purple hair. It had been almost a year since he'd seen Y/N last, and thinking about her just brought up the memories he had been trying to suppress. There were so many things he could have said to her.

Maybe if he had told her how he felt sooner she wouldn't have left him. He still felt guilty, think that perhaps there was something he could have done to save her, perhaps he could have been stronger and she wouldn't have died like she did.

The look of pain in her eyes as he held her was burned into his memory permanently. He couldn't even close his eyes without seeing her face, twisted in pain as she gasped out, barely able to breathe from the slash in her throat. It was only in that moment, in what was probably a desperate attempt for some sort of diety to save her, had he told her that he loved her.

He hated the fact that he hadn't been strong enough or quick enough to take action when that strange man defeated her pokemon with only his Aegislash, and then ordered it to take her down too. He had been close enough to see the panic in her eyes as she realised what was happening, and yet he hadn't been able to do anything.

It still had to be Leon who managed to scare off the man, and even the ex-Champion had to have the help of Raihan, Piers, and Gordie in order to do so.

The Gym Challenge had been put off until further notice, to give the people of Galar some time to grieve after the traumatizing event. On live television, too.

Hop wasn't aware of anything that was going on with the challenge. Last he had heard, Leon was supposed to be taking back the role of Champion, but everyone was in need of a break after what had happened.

He would spend most of his time in the Slumbering Weald, just walking around and reminiscing. Thankfully, Sonia understood, and didn't nag him about being gone most of the day since Y/N's death.

He was always reminded of all the times they had spent in the heavily wooded area. She was never afraid of getting lost, and she was always begging him to come along with her whenever she would.

She had always said she wanted to be buried in the Slumbering Weald. It was where she felt the most at home; the only place she felt she could truly be herself. Unfortunately, the League had other ideas, and insisted that she be buried where everyone else could see and visit.

"I'm so sorry," he whispered, his broken voice being carried by the wind.

He could still see the pain in her eyes as the light slowly faded from them. Even though she was trying to be strong and act as if she was completely okay that her time on earth had been cut short, she was still in pain.

"I've accepted this," she had told him. "I'm okay with my passing. You don't have to be okay. You may never be okay, and that's okay. It's normal."

It was a cruel fate. Nobody should have to come to terms with their own death, especially when it came long before it should have. Even though she was in pain, she seemed relaxed. Almost glad.

But the pain. It was enough to hurt even him, knowing just how much pain she was in.

He was snapped out of his thoughts by the loud cry of a Pokemon.

"Zacian...?"

He looked over to see the giant, blue Pokemon staring at him. The look in its eyes was pleading, and when the legendary beast turned around and began to walk through the woods, Hop followed.

He followed into the thickest part of the woods, and just when he thought he wouldn't be able to follow any longer, he stepped into a clearing. Zacian stared at him once more, from in the center of the clearing.

He noticed what was in the middle of the clearing, directly under Zacian's paw, and he gasped.

A luxury ball.

He rushed over and picked it up, releasing the Pokemon inside to reveal Y/N's most trusted partner; her Silvally. The Silvally cooed, obviously mourning the loss of its trainer, and Hop's eyes caught on the collar around its neck. The one that normally held its soothe bell.

He took the piece of paper from its collar. He exhaled shakily, unraveling the message.

Hop

I'm sorry for leaving. I can't change the future, even if I wanted to. This would have happened either way.

I love you, too.

-  Y/N

His cry of agony wasn't heard from anyone outside of the Slumbering Weald.

She knew that it would happen? How? Why wouldn't she at least try and change it? Or warn him. He would have never let her go onto that field.

Silvally came up to him and nudged him, breaking him out of his thoughts. He glanced over to it, and noticed that tears were running down his face. Quickly he wiped them off, and felt something drop in his lap.

He glanced down, seeing Sivally nudge the Luxury ball in his lap.

"W-why..?"

"She trusted you," Zacian spoke to him. "And Silvally does, too. It wants to fight beside you. Fight for her memory."

Hop glanced down at the capsule, taking it in his hand. He teared up again, and tried desperately to dry his eyes.

"L-Lee... You would do better with Lee," he told Silvally, his voice quiet. Silvally cried out in grief, and nudged itself into Hop's chest.

Hop glanced down, stroking its weird hair, and when he looked up again, Zacian was gone. He felt the wind blow past him, and Silvally cooed, at least somewhat content.

He sighed. "Fine. We'll keep her memory alive," he promised Silvally, his throat raw.
