**The Pier**

I had been sitting by my lonesome for about thirty minutes, before I felt another presence behind me.

My shoulders stiffened, before Autumn sat down next to me with a sigh.

We both dangle our legs over the side, a shiver running down my back as the spray from the waves hits my exposed legs.

"He is your mate isn't he?" She asks calmly, not turning her head to look at me.

I swallowed harshly, nodding.

"I had a feeling. I tried to pry it out of Kaden, but he was steadfast." Autumn chuckles lowly, making me roll my eyes.

"Why didn't you tell me? We've been friends since before we could walk. I've always known you and Kaden were closer, but I just assumed you would trust me." She sighs, toying with her manicured hands in her lap.

"I do trust you Autumn, I was just embarrassed." I wince, my fists tightening in my lap.

Autumn nods in understanding, her loose brown waves flowing around her shoulders.

"The only guy to ever reject me, just had to be my mate." I curse under my breath, craning my head back to glance at the stars.

She clicks her tongue, "just because he rejected you, doesn't mean he doesn't want you."

I laugh emotionlessly, "I think that's exactly what it means."

Autumn shrugs, a thoughtful look on her face.

"Has he ever outright rejected you? Like formally?" She quirks a brow.

Biting my lip, I shake my head.

Walker had never said the words: I, Ever Walker, reject you Sybil Carter, as my one true mate.

I wasn't quite sure why he hadn't taken that step quite yet. He was engaged to another woman, and made it painfully clear he had no romantic intentions with me.

"He cares for you, Sybil. Even I could see that before I knew you were mates." She says softly, laying a hand on mine in support.

"Walker is so hard to figure out." I groan, laying back on to the wood of the pier.

Autumn laughs from above me, still in a seated position

I lay an arm over my eyes in desperation.

"Well it wasn't hard to see that Rory pissed him off. After you left, he stormed back into the beach house and I haven't heard a peep from him since." She tells me, glancing over her shoulder to smirk at me.

"He's just a temperamental asshole." I scoff, shaking my head at my mate's infuriating attitude.

"He was jealous. I don't know about you, but I don't think he would act that way if he didn't like you." She clarifies for me, with a snort.
