Who needs an alarm clock when you've got kids?

"WAAAH!"

That's my 3-year-old, Asher. He's an adorable little demon, and some mornings I just can't deal with him. So I get Mia, my fourteen-year-old, to.

"Mia?"

"Got it!" Thank God for her.

I close my eyes for a moment then swing my feet into my slippers, trudging towards my ensuite.

Inside, I brush my teeth then step into the shower. I wash my hair, my face and my body, wasting no time as I have work today.

I work two jobs, both with potential promotions. One is a graphic designing business run by Timothy Rellek, the other a tech company run by Carson O'Connell. If I get one promotion I can quit the other job, settle down and live a comfortable life with my kids.

I'm a single mom. When I got pregnant with Mia at seventeen, my boyfriend left me. It became so stressful for my parents that they split up, and my mom blamed everything on me. After putting up with her constant torment, I moved in with my best friend Maria. Since then I have found two stable jobs, moved into a decent townhouse, had Asher and here we are today.

"Thinking about your past again?" Mia's head pops into my room, and I shake mine at her.

"Why would you think that?" I question, and she sighs.

"You have that tint in your eyes and that weird smile-frown thing. You okay?" Mia sits beside me, and I pull her into a hug.

"I'm alright. Just tired."

"You know... if I a job I can buy things myself. Then you can just pay for Ash." Mia offers and I smile. Even though she can be moody, Mia's a genuinely kind-hearted person, and I want to provide the best for her and Asher. I just can't let her work while she could be hanging out with friends or partying.

"Mia, I told you, it's fine. If I get that promotion, we'll be okay."

"Whatever, I know you'll get it though."

"Thanks, Mia. Now get ready for school. Remember you're dropping-"

"I know mom, chill." Mia grins and leaves me to get ready.

"Miss Jackson, you're early," my boss, Carson, greets as I walk through the doors at seven a.m.

"Yeah, um, Asher woke up earlier than usual," I respond awkwardly, looking at the floor. Why is he talking to me?

"Ah, kids. How many?"

"Two; a teenager and a toddler." I look up at his emerald green eyes, my gaze lingering longer than it should have.

"Miss Jackson?"

"What? Sorry, I was, uh, looking at the poster." I shift my eyes to the wall behind Carson and my face heats up.

"Really? I didn't know a poster was on my face." He smirks, and my blush deepens.

Regaining my confidence, I return my eyes to his face. "If you don't mind, I need to leave half an hour earlier"

"How come?" His eyebrow raises, making him look even more intimidating.

"Well, my daughter has an after school program today and I still have my other job to get to so I need to pick up Asher early from Maria's house because she has places to be-"

"Okay, okay," Carson laughs, whipping his phone from his pocket.

"Let's see... Yep, you're good to go. I'll tell your supervisor."
