Tuesday morning I wake up to the ringing of my phone's ringtone. I claw at my nightstand for a few moments, then manage to grab it and answer the call.
"Who is it?" I murmur almost incoherently.
"Hello, is this Jenny?"
"Carson!" I shoot up immediately, all sleepiness washing away from my body. "Sorry, my phone does that sometimes, like, I'll sound weird when I first pick up, but yeah, it's me. What's up?"
"I need you to come into the office today. I have something to ask you, and I feel it would be better in person."
"Sure, I'll come in a bit before work."
"Great," Carson says, and the line goes dead. That wasn't rude at all.
I groan at the thought of having to get ready an hour before I usually do, but there's really no point in going back to sleep.
Once I'm ready, I leave a note for Mia telling her that I'm dropping Asher off at the neighbours' house for the day and make her breakfast. I then walk Asher to my neighbours, Linda and Lawrence, and drive to the office.
Inside there are only a few people, which is no surprise given the time, but unfortunately Cami Keller just has to be one of those one people.
"Well well well, if it isn't Jenny Jackson."
"Actually it is."
"Ugh, your mere existence is pathetic."
"Cami, aren't you getting a little old for this?" I place a hand on my hip.
"For what?"
"Making fun of people with comebacks from the first grade. I'm fact, I've heard preschoolers come up with better insults."
Cami glares at me. "Whatever. I just wanted to remind you that I will be getting that promotion and I will be superior. Then me and Carson will get married and live happily in our penthouse with a little chihuahua named Rosie."
"Great, then Carson will be living with two female dogs." I smile sarcastically, then walk off confidently.
"Hey!" Cami exclaims, grabbing the attention of a few co-workers.
Ignoring her, I confirm my meeting with the intern at the front desk and enter when she tells me to.
"Mr. O'Connell, you called?"
"Yes, Ms. Jackson, have a seat."
"What do you need?"
"Well, I'm not entirely sure how to say this," Carson clears his throat, and I nod slowly.
"Okay..."
Carson takes a few seconds to compose himself, then speaks. "My parents, Yousef and Carrie O'Connell, are hosting a dinner party, and I was wondering if you could-"
"Could what? Go for you? Because technically I'm not hired yet but..."
"No, I need you to go with me."
"For experience? Because if you want me to go so you can try and convince me-"
"No, no, I need you to go with me."
"I'm confused."
"Okay, let me explain. My parents, mostly my dad, actually, are trying to hook me up with Ms. Keller. They're saying it's good for business, or something along those lines, because the Kellers are well known. My dad wants me to bring her to the dinner, but she's not exactly a person I want to spend my time with."
