I had to call a dog-sitter up last minute, but I finally found one. Then the rest of the night was filled with choosing outfits and packing up practically my entire wardrobe.
I couldn't sleep that night, I was so excited. So when I woke up the next morning at 5:45, you can probably imagine how tired I was.
I threw on a sweatshirt and some leggings; I liked to be comfy. Then I did my makeup extremely lightly, but I put on enough so that you couldn't see how tired I actually was. I straightened my hair and packed up the last of my stuff, and by then it was 6:35. Tom wasn't there yet, but he'd texted me to tell me that he was on his way.
I got a knock at my door, and that was when the butterflies came. A whole hurricane of them. I opened it, and there he stood. He wore a plain black t-shirt with blue jeans and tennis shoes.
We greeted each other, and he helped me with my bags as we made our way down to the lobby and out to his car. After we'd loaded all the luggage into the trunk, we hopped into the front.
There was a silence for a couple seconds, but I decided to break it by saying, "I'm so excited!"
"Really? I'm glad you are. I'm so happy you said yes; at the time I really thought you weren't going to."
"Well, it was spontaneous, but I like spontaneous things. I like to think that I'm a spontaneous girl."
He laughed. "Yeah, me too."
So after about an hour of small talk, we reached the airport, and made our way inside with the luggage, then put all of it but our carry-on onto the conveyor belt thing.
Our flight left at 8:00, so we were basically just on time. We filed into a line at the gate, showed our Passports and tickets, and boarded the plane. Tom got us first-class, but I didn't think it any different from the others, except you got free champagne.
Once we were seated, Tom started to tell me about his family because he figured it would be easier for me to talk to them if I knew some about them. It was so incredibly fun because we were basically having a trivia about his family the whole way over there.
Once the speakers announced that we would be landing soon though, I realized something.
"Oh my gosh Tom I don't have a ring!" I exclaimed.
His face suddenly broke into a huge smile and he said, "I've got you covered." He dug into his pants pocket and pulled out a ring, and took my hand. As he gently placed it on my left ring finger, I was overcome with butterflies.
I looked at the ring. It was beautiful. It was huge, too; it must've cost a fortune. "Oh my goodness..." I said. "Was this your fiancé's?"
He nodded, then smiled halfheartedly.
"I'm sorry you two didn't work out," I said. It was the only think I could think of to say. He was obviously still bummed.
He shook his head. "Me too, but it was my fault. I knew it wouldn't work, but I didn't voice my feelings. I held back, thinking things would get better, but they didn't." He ended it with a small shrug.
I never thought I would be in that type of situation. I wasn't sure what to say, so I changed the subject. "So, I'm going to have to go by her name, right?"
He nodded and put on a smile. "Right. Bianca. That's your name. I never gave them her last name, so you can go by yours. You'll just have to do a bit of acting, but I'm sure you'll be fine."
"Easy for you to say!" I exclaimed with a giddy grin on my face. "Can I go by Emily though? I'll tell them that's my middle name, only that you call me by my first sometimes."
He nodded. "That's fine."
Then the speaker announced that we had landed, and I couldn't stop smiling. I was so excited and nervous at the same time. I was sitting on the edge of my seat, anxious to meet his family. Anxious to pretend the huge diamond on my finger was actually mine.
We got out our carry-on, and began to exit the plane. We didn't see his family at first, so we made our way to the baggage claim and started to search for our luggage. That was when I heard a man's voice shout, "Tom!"
