A/N: Jackson and Shadow are ocs that I tend to ship. This is a revised version of a story from two or so years ago. I used to refer to Jackson by he/him pronouns back them but I've started using they/them pronouns because it fits Jackson and their story a bit better. If I slipped up don't be afraid to point it out.

     Jackson stood there waiting. Shadow knew they would be there. There was no denying the inevitable. They had found out about their secret relations. Shadow stared nervously. What would they make them do? Next to Jackson was a tall man. Shadow could only assume it was their boss. He grabbed Jackson's arm and whispered into their ear a command. Jackson wouldn't move, no, they couldn't move. They can't bring himself to hurt Shadow. They owed him too much. Jackson's refusal to move pissed off the man. He pushed Jackson down. "Do it you ratchet bitch!" His voice was cold, unforgiving, and commanding. Jackson slowly pushed themself up but they were doing it to slow by the man's standards. He put his foot to Jackson's side and pushed as hard as he could. Shadow heard the small yelp escape from Jackson's mouth as they hit the ground once more.

     "What are you going to do now, fucking cry?! Get the hell up!"

     Jackson got up once more this time they were able to stand. The tall man was pleased with Jackson's compliance.

     "Now, do what you were told to do in the first place."

     Jackson summoned their weapon. It's shiny blade reflected the dim glow of the street lights. It was a blade known for its death toll and for having a puppet for a master. No, Jackson wasn't it's master. They never had any control over what their life would be. Hell, the blade had more control over them than they did of themselves. Shadow watched as Jackson charged at him. To him, there was no point in trying to escape or even survive. Nobody could ever escape Jackson. They were a weapon of great power and if they weren't useful they would have gotten rid of them long ago, them and Puppy.

     Jackson charged at Shadow. Although, they had decided their and Shadow's fate long ago. They wanted to be with him. Jackson ran behind Shadow and pulled him back. They charged all their power and let it all flow into their sword. They let it all charge towards their boss. It kicked up dirt and dust. Jackson grabbed Shadow's arm and began running away. Shadow was confused but relieved. They looked back at the tall man who stood there in shock or at least what they thought they saw through the dust. Defiance was something he wasn't used to. Shadow couldn't process what was going on but he kept running with Jackson.

     They'd been running for a while now and had begun to slow down only to come to a complete stop at an ally. Shadow was gasping for air while Jackson was only breathing heavily. A faint humming noise could be heard. The noise was coming from the ornament in Jackson's hair. The jewel in the center was glowing and humming.

     "What... is... that?" Shadow asked still trying to catch his breath.

     "They're trying to track me." Shadow looked at it and tugged at it. Jackson pulled away.

     "It's not going to come off Shadow, I've tried. It's magically bound to me or at least my hair." Shadow's breath had calmed a bit.

     "Then let's cut your hair." Jackson considered it, grabbed their blade, and aimed it above the ornament.

     With mild hesitation and a swift blow, they chopped it off. It made Shadows stomach churn knowing that the blades sharpness was capable of that. Their hair fell to the floor and the ornament hit with a clank. Jackson turned to Shadow.

     "Let's go. It's not going to take them long to find me or at least my hair. He has goons all over the city." With that, they began running again but this time they had no idea where to go.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     They found shelter in an abandoned home outside the city borders. They couldn't keep running or at least Shadow couldn't. The house was empty and old, spider webs and dust covering most of the place. Some trees and vegetation were leaking in like water. They found a small room with an old dusty bed. They searched around some more and found some clean sheets in a closet. They decided not to take a chance with the bed and settled on the floor. Shadow laid down tired, ready for some sleep and using Jackson's lap as a pillow while Jackson stayed up as a watch. After a while, Jackson couldn't keep his eyes open. He felt himself drifting off.
