Momma Joyce to the rescue

“Cause you really are still just bullshit Steve!”

And just like that, the room is spinning for one Steve Harrington. He can’t even remember how the fight started. One moment everyone was having a good ol’time eating dinner at the Harrington household where steve had offered to host. Then the next thing he knows he and Nancy are arguing, well more like nancy’s yelling and steve is trying to hold it together, everyone trying to calm them down to no avail. Steve had actually been doing a good job of keeping it together.

That is until Nancy said that and his world went reeling. Was everything always this fuzzy? He doesnt even notice hes standing until he hears the muffled screech of a chair scraping across the floor. He Stumbles out of the dining room hitting his hip on the doorframe but he hardly registers that over the sound of his heart in his head. He just needs to get out of here because suddenly everything is too much yet too muffled and he can’t handle this. Distantly he recognizes a faraway voice yell his name before he locks himself in a bathroom desperately trying to calm down.

After Steve ran out the world seemed to freeze, no one daring break the silence he left in his wake. After a few moments of silence though Hopper was first to speak.

“What just happened?” The Chief whispers into the tense Dining room. It seems him speaking encourages Dustin to speak up.

“What the hell Nancy?!” The kid yells while he stands up.

“Yeah what was that for? Sure hes a dingus but he couldn’t have done anything to deserve that!” Robin yells being the next person to stand up and glower at Nancy. Everyone stays quiet again after that clearly expecting an answer. Come to think of it the young girl seems to have hardly moved since steve stormed out. Everyone in the room looks at her closer only to realize she looks like she doesnt have the answer herself. seemingly shocked and upset by her own outburst. They stay like that watching her a few more seconds while her mouth opens and closes before she finally finds her words.

“I….i don’t-i don’t know what got into me i…” is what she manages to get out before he deflates into herself feeling guilty. Joyce looks around the room seeing everyone looking too shocked to do much before she clears her throat and stands herself.

“I’m gonna go check on him” she announces before walking out of the room choosing not to wait for anyone’s response. While she makes her strides down the nice clean hall she can’t help but notice exactly how clean and unlived in the house feels. There are no family pictures on the walls, no little knickknacks from family outings not even a stray childhood art project. It feels like you’ve stepped into a magazine the house just feels so...so cold . How could a kid grow up living here? It’s no secret how often the Harringtons are out of town leaving their son to stay in the small town. It’s not like nobody noticed the disregard they seem to have for theyre son in fact, its been the subject of lots of town gossip, People simply don’t care or find a way to justify how the boys treated.

They used to be able to skate by on the fact that Steve Harrington was just a spoiled mean popular kid. A kid that only cared about how high on he was on the highschool foodchain. Another dumb popular dumb jock type who seeks joy in others pain. The thing is though Steve’s changed and now that she’s gotten to know him she can see why he acted the way he did. Joyce Byers is ashamed to say that before everything with the upside down she wouldn’t have given it a second talk to say she thought he was a mean bully who should be taken down a peg. She always thought a bully was most all Steve was but now she sees that’s not the case. He’s kind, caring, funny and loyal to those he holds close and would do anything to keep them safe. He acts clueless abut things but deep down he has a real love for math and si-fi movies but won’t admit it because he thinks it might make people think hes less ‘cool’ , which is unfortunately true in most cases. He loves the kids and thinks theyre the greatest things in the world but doesnt tell them that because even though he thinks he hides it well he thinks they’ll leave him.
