Another weekend, another quest for something to do. Because last week we opted for our girls' night in, we decided that we would be going out this weekend. Sierra, Andre, and the rest of the guys were planning on going to the club tonight where Josh worked. He was a bouncer, so he said that he'd be able to let me and Marianna in, even though we were a year younger than the rest of them. This was perfect because going to the club was very high on our bucket list. Raven and Jasper decided that they were going to have a 'couple's night', whatever that meant.
We arrived at the club, which was only a few streets down from our building. There was a slight wind that pushed against my bare legs, causing me to instinctively pull down my short black dress. As we lined up, I huddled into Marianna. There weren't many people in front of us, but a lot of people had joined the line since we got there. I looked up at the bright neon sign that read "Club Mynt." Before I knew it, it was our turn to go in.
"My brother," grinned Josh as he dapped up his friends. He let our group of six through.
Through the doors, we were greeted by the hard sound of the bass followed by a DJ's voice. The club wasn't packed yet, and we found our way to the bar. "Do you guys want me to grab you something?" Andre asked.
"Can you get me a vodka-cran?" I answered as I went to reach for some change. Andre shook his head at me. When Marianna gave him her order, he flashed a smile and took off with Sierra.
The second we walked in, Reece disappeared. I guess you could say things were a bit awkward, but no one seemed to notice but me and Sierra. After returning with our drinks, Sierra and Andre took to the dance floor.
"Oh my God Mari, this is our song!" I screamed in surprise. For a full two minutes, we laughed and sang the words to each other.
"This is the life," Marianna sighed contently. I nodded and took a sip of my drink.
"That was very entertaining," said Travis with a lazy grin.
Suddenly, Marianna froze. Without breaking eye contact with whatever it was that stopped her, she said, "I'll be right back," and walked straight past me.
"What's up with her?" he questioned.I shook my head, confused. "I have no idea. She's been acting really weird lately."
"I'm not gonna lie, she was giving off some freaky vibes at the Bnb,"
It took everything in me not to glare at him. How dare he try to disrespect my best friend. "Was that before or after you slept with her?"
Travis' eyes opened wide with surprise. "Hold up, what?"
Now, I glared at him to my heart's content. "What the fuck do you mean what?"
"She said we...?" he let out a dry laugh. "Nah. I was really feeling her, we were getting to know each other and shit. Then she gets a text and takes off. I assumed it was you, but then I found out that you were with Reece the whole night."
"So who...?"
"Did she spend the night with?" he finished. "Yeah, now I'd like to know too."
I tried not to read into it too much. She told me it was Travis. What was the point of lying? There's no reason I could think of that justified her actions. It did explain why she had been acting weird lately, but what did that have to do with what just happened? Once I started walking, I didn't stop until I found my way out a back door.
Taking comfort in the cool air, I leaned against the brick wall of the building. A few moments passed of me enjoying the time alone, when the door a few meters away from me swung open. The door slammed shut and revealed a couple facing the opposite direction. From where I was, I could only make out a tall blonde, and a shorter figure with braids.
It couldn't be.
Now, I am a very rational person, but there was literally no solution I could come up with that explained why Jasper and Marianna had just gotten into an Uber together. Why was he here? Wasn't he supposed to be with Raven? Any other time, I would simply see it as a friend coming to pick his friend up and making sure she got home safe. But now, after finding out that she lied about Travis, I knew something had to be up.
Oh my God. Never Have I Ever. She said that she had slept with a taken man before. No, Malorie, don't jump to conclusions, this is Marianna you're talking about.
What the fuck Marianna?
I decided to keep what I saw and heard to myself. At least just until I had time to go to the source directly. Also, at the end of the day, my loyalty still lied with Mari, and I owed it to her to hear her out. With this in mind, I stood up straight and walked back into the club, determined to not let this fuck up the rest of my night.
Turns out, I only got in two steps before a firm grip was placed on my arm and I was dragged back outside. "We need to talk."
I returned to my spot on the wall, this time with Reece by my side. "Yes, I suppose we do."
He pulled out a cigarette and brought it to his lips, the flame from his lighter illuminating his perfect face. "So about the other day-"
"How long have you had feelings for her?" I interrupted.
After taking a long drag he reached out, offering me the lit cigarette. I accepted, crossing another thing off of the list, though this one much further down. "Since our freshman year," he sighed. "A couple days before the first day of school, I saw her moving in. God, she looked gorgeous. Things got kind of hectic for me last September so I got really busy. When things calmed down, out of nowhere she was dating Andre. And he's family, so there's no way I could try anything."
I handed back his cigarette and searched his face, trying to see what else he was thinking. His face was expressionless. "I'm sorry," I offered.
"Nah, I'm over it," he shrugged. "I realized I kind of fucked up with you though. Let me fix it."
A smile worked its way across my face. It was gone as soon as it appeared. "Oh, Reece. I'm really not looking for a relationship or anything right now."
"Duh, neither am I," he said matter-of-factly. "But you have to admit that whatever it was that we had was very fun."
"Was it? I feel like I remember you calling me the wrong name at some point,"
He snorts.
"Oh, that wasn't you?" I continue. "Maybe I got you mixed up with someone else."
I let out a long laugh that I had been holding in.
"Shut up," he said, a cloud of smoke leaving his lips. "I'm not even going to apologize because I know for a fact I'm never living this down."
"No," I replied simply. I then pushed my back off of the wall and stood so I was less than an arm's length away. Going up on my tippy toes, I stopped when my lips were inches away from his. "No commitment. No feelings."
He closed the gap between us, his free hand making its way to the back of my head. "You got it."
