Marianna and I stepped out into the brisk December air. A few weeks had passed since the movie night, and we were back to normal, telling each other everything. I had taken a break from the bucket list as exams were approaching. Now that I was completely done with this semester, I had to decide whether I wanted to spend the break here, or go back home until January. While I was done with my exams now, Mari still had two left. Of course, that didn’t stop her from going out this weekend. With everything that had been going on, we decided that we needed to go out, just the two of us. We walked up the steps to the house party and stepped through the door, passing two five dollar bills over to the guy to our left.
In a far corner, we spotted Travis and Josh. “Should we?” I asked, knowing that we had planned on just enjoying each other’s company for the night. Before she could give me an answer, I made eye contact with Travis. “Too, late, they’re on their way over.”
“I haven’t seen you two in a while,” smiled Josh, giving each of us a hug.
“We’ve been super busy,” I lied. The real reason was because I had been avoiding all of the guys. I really didn’t want to run into Reece. After that night, I decided to just take Andre’s advice and leave him alone, but I didn’t want to admit to anyone what happened. I explained it to Marianna of course, and we both decided that it would be a good idea just to lay low for a bit.
I wasn’t going to lie, I missed him, but I did also realize that because things were always just physical between us, we never really knew each other. Maybe a part of that was because I knew that if I got too close, catching feelings would be inevitable.
We all stood listening to the music and chatting about our exams until the guys invited us to the back to smoke. It was our first time hanging out with Josh and Travis on our own. From what I could tell those two were best friends. Josh didn’t talk much, but he was pretty funny when he did. Travis on the other hand was a full blown comedian and he had the exact same weird humour that Marianna and I shared. While they sparked up the spliff, I wondered to myself why we hadn't hung out with them more.
“Why is Tekashi Snitch Nine looking at me?” Travis said as he exhaled a cloud of smoke.
I turned around to see who he was looking at and immediately burst out laughing. “No! Why does that look exactly like him!?”
Standing over by the door was a skinny guy with face tattoos and rainbow hair who certainly resembled the rapper. We all continued to chuckle as we passed in the rotation. I leaned against a tree and looked around. The backyard we were in was a nice size. It had a little deck with a patio set that was covered in a light layer of snow. All around were groups of friends, different sizes, doing various things.
Some people seemed to be just catching some air, while others were smoking things of all sorts: weed, cigarettes, vapes. I enjoyed the feeling of the cool air slapping against my hot cheeks. I wasn’t stupidly high, but I did feel good.
As we were finishing up, the back door of the house swung open. There was a group of about five or six stepping out onto the deck. The one in front, a short girl wearing nothing but a cropped tank top and ripped jeans, stopped and surveyed the yard. “Whoa, there are a LOT of black people out here.”
Instinctively, my wide eyes flew to Marianna and the boys to see if they heard that. An identical looking girl next to the one that spoke, obviously drunk, let out a loud laugh. “Izzy, you seriously said that so frickin’ loud.”
“I’m just being honest,” the girl, Izzy, replied. “Are you sure we’re in Greenway?”
“Hmm,” the other girl started, but was cut off by an obnoxious burp courtesy of Izzy, “I think so Iz.”
