"What is taking Bellamy so long?" Monty complained, hiding a pole behind his back.
The remaining forty-three kids each had a ladder rung or a post from the bunks. They all stood facing the doors, shoulder to shoulder as they waited. Jasper and Delaney stood on either side of Monty, both of them looking at him.
"Maybe he got caught," Jasper suggested.
"Don't even say that. He knows what he's doing, Jasper." Delaney complained. "He'll find a way out. I know it."
"It's been four hours and we haven't seen him since."
"He and Maya are working on it, I told you."
"They're gonna take someone else," Harper whispered.
"No! Everyone listen to me. We stick to the plan. They are not taking anyone else from this room without a fight."
"Here they come!" Miller yelled after Jasper finished. He ran away from the door, jumping in line right next to Delaney. She handed him his pole behind his back and he took it just before the doors opened.
Dr. Tsing led her guards into the room, her eyes scanning the rows. The front row all linked arms, hiding their weapons in back pockets as they created a wall. The guards shouted for them to get back but all seven of them held a defiant look as they stood their ground.
Dr. Tsing walked right up to the front row, her eyes locked with Monty. She smiled. "This one."
"No. No!" Jasper yelled.
Delaney and Jasper cut Monty out of the chain, linking up ahead of him. They and the rest of the front row held strong, pushing the soldiers back. When they pulled out batons the link broke and the poles were pulled out from behind everyone's backs.
The guards grabbed Monty, pulling him away. Delaney snatched the gun out of the back of Jasper's pants.
"Let him go!" She pulled the trigger.
The guard stumbled back, holding his shoulder in pain. Everything went silent for a moment as everyone looked at each other. Then the guards turned toward the group of kids, hitting them with their batons and shoving them down.
The kids retaliated with their poles, smacking guards and jabbing them with the ends. The guard that Delaney shot tried to knock her gun away. She wasn't too familiar with the weapon, but she didn't let it go. Instead, she reversed the momentum, swinging the butt of the pistol into his helmet. It knocked him off balance long enough for her to kick out one of his legs and send him to the ground.
A nearby guard pushed one of the other kids into Delaney, knocking them both down. The gun skidded away from her and the guards beat everyone else back.
Dr. Tsing stepped forward, pointing at Delaney. "Take her instead."
"Don't touch me!" She yelled, scrambling out from under the other kid. She thrashed, kicking at the guards and trying to fight back as they each grabbed an arm. It was no use. The guards took Delaney with them, holding her captive. She couldn't help but think that at least she'd find out where the basement was.
They stopped at the elevator, the woman giving orders to her guards to prep Delaney as soon as they got down there. Delaney's anger started to melt away as red spots appeared on the doctor's face. The guards slowly let go of her, sinking to the ground as the elevator doors opened.
Delaney grabbed a baton, putting it in-between the doors of the elevator to keep it from closing. She turned to find her friends when the doctor grabbed onto her ankle.
Delaney shook her head. She brought her other foot down on the doctor's wrist, seething at her. "You are lucky I'm saving you for my friends."
She landed a kick to the doctor's head, knocking her out, before grabbing a gun and running down the hall.
