KaraA proud smile, almost boastful made its way to my face as the ball, or, I hit a strike. I swiftly turned around, "I am so going to wi-" my statement stopped as I saw Toby stood up with a girl across from him.
They both looked dumbfounded, Toby looking really angered yet sincere at the same time. I didn't want to disturb them, as I made my way onto the seat that was farthest from them, Toby called me over.
"She's my girlfriend."
I was stunned at his words, my mind was practically pounding already at what he had just said. Adding to the confusion, Toby snaked his arm around my waist, pulling me closer to him. I looked at the girl in front of us, she was the girl I bumped into at the restaurant. The girl that I wanted to be. What did she have to do with Toby? What the hell is happening? Why did Toby just say that I was his girlfriend? What the hell did I miss?
The girl looked absentmindedly shocked as she watched Toby's actions.
"Well, nice to meet you.. again. What's your name?" She asked and said in a tone where it sounded like she definitely didn't like meeting me.
"I'm Kara, and you are?" I raised my eyebrow at her, clearly confused as to who she was.
"My name's Sydney, one of Toby's... friends" She glanced at Toby as well as I did. His lips were pressed into a line, I could tell he was sort of nervous, I guess, "Well it was nice meeting you, Kara.. And bumping into you, Toby" She flashed us a smile and I watched as she walked back to a guy that was waiting for her by the exit of the bowling alley.
"Hey bro, I saw Sydney out there.." Riley walked up to us with a pair of bowling seeing that Toby's arm was still around me. I hadn't even noticed quickly that they were here. Riley chuckled to himself and sat down putting on his bowling shoes.
"Well, mind telling me what all that was about any time soon?" I shooed his arm away from my waist and sat down, taking a drink from my glass of water.
"I..uh.. don't know... i just...." He sat down next to me, his elbows resting on his knees and his hands taking over his face. He looked stressed. Over what? I had no clue.
"Sydney is Toby's ex, she was the first girl Toby had introduced to us, the first that Toby actually fell in love with. That was, until she decided to just come one day and break up with him for no reason at all." Riley practically explained all that for Toby.
"Alriiiiight. But why the hell did you have to tell her that I was your girlfriend? Which we all know I am not." My voice reaching its peak as I said all of it, agitated. Riley almost spit his water out once he heard what I said.
"You know what, I'm just going to go check out on Connor and your brothers real quick." Riley left his seat and walked over to the three guys ordering food.
"Helloooo, I kind of need an answer here?" I removed his hands from his face and he looked at me and groaned.
"I just.. I need you to pretend to be my girlfriend... for just a little while."
"And why is that?"
"Because... she told me I still haven't gotten myself another girl proving that I haven't moved on from her, which I have.. but my words weren't enough to convince her..so I wanted to prove to her face that I have moved on from her and that I do have a new girlfriend." All the information I was taking in was so much. It happened so fast I barely had time to think about it myself, what he was doing.
"What if, what if I can't do that? What if I can't be your role play girlfriend?" I asked, worry in my voice. I had no idea why I was worrying but I felt like this was going to lead to something wrong.
"Please, just do it... for me. I know that me and her are going to be seeing each other often but I want her to see me with you." I sighed heavily, running my hands through my hair, "please?"
I looked at him disapprovingly, almost saying no, but I thought about it quickly. My life is plain, old boring and if I agreed to his little plan, then maybe, just maybe, I would be in for a little experience. I could just imagine myself as a mother telling her children that I once fake dated someone and it was a hell of a ride. I shook my head at my idea of exciting, heck, I was worried at what would happen, "Fine." I gave in. I had no idea if I just let the word slip out so easily or if I even considered going the other direction but I was stuck with my answer.
"Really?" He looked at me with wide eyes, evidently shocked that I agreed.
"Mhmm, yeah."
"Thank you, thank you, thank you! I swear I'll make it up to you."
"Well, how about you buy me coffee, drive home, and let me bury you in sand because you just lost the game and you owe me." I smiled innocently. He jokingly rolled his eyes at my nagging but I knew he would do those things anyways.
This was the strange hunch that took over my thoughts before we left, but somehow, it felt like I wasn't going to even argue with my mind about this.
I was his girlfriend now. Well, his pretend girlfriend at the most.
