I couldn't sleep at all last night. Something about that pearl changing colors in the palm of my hand. I know we are all 'demi-gods' here, but I didn't force the pearl to change colors. It was involuntary, if anything. But, no magic was used on it? Thoughts were swirling my brain. What did it mean? Did it mean anything at all? I haven't fully awaken my powers yet, but they started developing early, because my dad is so cool. He can, like, squirt water our of his fingers and stuff. When we go to his ocean during the summer, he does amazing tricks with it, like make whirlpools and he's able to push the water back so we can find secret seashells where no one else can.
But nothing explains the pearl that I held in my hand. I was still thinking about it when the stupid trumpets went off again, announcing that it was morning.
At breakfast, everyone was talking about the scavenger hunt was yesterday. I did not want to talk about it because 1. I don't want to think about the pearls anymore, they haunt me, and 2. I didn't win. They hid ten pearls and our team, thanks to me, only got four.
Jason was sitting next to me and his head wasn't in a book this time. He kept looking at me and for once I was the one trying to ignore him. "Percy...did anything weird hap-"
"No! Why would you even think something weird is going on?" I leaned against my arm, with my elbow on the table. I felt defeated, constantly feeling on edge about these pearls.
"No reason, just...trying to make small talk..." He went back to his food, poking it with his fork. "Man, this food is not like how it is at home..."
"Yeah, it needs blue food dye." I ignored Jason's strange looks and continued to eat my plain brown muffin. It was even a blueberry one and I saw no hints of blue in it. As if today couldn't get any worse.
When we were done with breakfast, the camp decided to just have a relaxing, free-time kind of day. Jason kept sticking close to me, I mean, who could blame him though. Deep down we both knew that I was the coolest guy here. We were sitting up against some trees and I had a stick that I was pushing through the gravel, making designs. I don't know if it was just me, but there was a strange energy hanging over the whole camp. Some people were acting normal, but some people looked to be on edge, looking out for something. "Did something happen that I'm not aware of?" I looked over to Jason and his neck seemed to be burning him. The heat crawled behind his ears and he looked like he was on the edge of suffocating.
"Maybe....maybe something did happen yesterday?" I gave him a look and asked him to explain some more about what he was implying. He showed me his arm and pulled his sleeve back.
"Ok, cool bracelet man, where did you get it? Walmart or something?"
Jason gave me a look and whispered, "No...They gave it to me. I was chosen." I gave him a questioning look but then started to laugh. I'm being pranked right now, I have to be. No way was there anything about being 'chosen'. Chosen for what even? "Don't laugh, Percy! It's serious. The pearl yesterday," I stopped him.
"No, I don't want to hear about the pearls."
"Why? Because something weird happened to you also! I knew it! Percy what did you do?!"
"Why do you think I had something to do with it? No one here has that strong of powers developed to mess with our heads like that, or something. I don't even know what it means so let's just drop it."
"I can't, Percy. It's serious. We were chosen."
"Oh yeah, like I believe a scavenger hunt with fake plastic pearls at a summer camp could be anything serious. Jason, I want to be your friend, but now I'm starting to question whether or not you are mentally stable."
"No, you have to tell someone that the pearls spoke to you also, I don't know what is happening, or about to happen, but if you are chosen, then you need to tell them." I rubbed the back of my neck and thought about it. I guess it is weird that my dad wanted me to go to summer camp this year. If things would have worked out like normal, I would be at the beach right now, getting tan and ready for the ladies.
"Ok, who do I tell?" Jason pointed me in the direction of the main camp counselors. They squatted down slightly to my height and asked what I needed. I had to hold the urge to slap them in the face, but then I whispered, "So...about those pearls...?" Their eyes got bigger and they led me to somewhere more private. They asked what I was wondering and I pulled my pearl out of my pocket and showed them it. At first it was doing nothing, just acting like a regular pearl, and they got disappointed. But after a few seconds, the blue swirling storm inside the pearl started up and their eyes lit up.
"Ok...ok, ok, ok. So we have six pearls so far that have tested positive... Do you know anyone else that had an experience like yours to the pearls who haven't talked to us yet?" Their shoulders shrunk down and they had a small hint of, once again, disappointment on their faces. "Ok, that's fine. If you hear of anyone talking about their experiences with the pearls, be sure to tell us, okay?" The guy grabbed my arm and clipped a bracelet onto me. "It's very important that we find the other four." The guy patted my shoulder and when we were about to leave he called me a chosen one.
I went back to Jason and showed him my bracelet. Now, I was even more confused about the pearls.
