"Don't talk, don't say a thing
Cause your eyes they tell me more than your words
don't go, don't leave me now
Cause they say the best way out is through
And I am short on words knowing what's occurred
She begins to leave because of me
Her bag is now much heavier
I wish that I could carry her
But this is our ungodly hour"
Ungodly Hour, by The Fray
Slowly John and I staggered back through the dark landscape into the direction of my house.
"I'm surprised you still remembered our little games, Helen. I knew immediately what you were hinting at," John mentioned casually.
I laughed dryly. "I had counted on it, John. Looking back, you and Dad had trained me often enough," I replied and we continued walking.
"What will Damon do with the corpse?" I asked as calmly as possible.
John shrugged. "Well, the safest way would be to feed it piece by piece to the alligators."
I breathed deeply, but my stomach revolted anyway. I suddenly felt sick. Holding on to the next tree I supported myself bent-forward while I heaved dry.
John wanted to help, but I pushed him away. "Stop that," I gasped and wiped my mouth on my cuff.
"Helen, please let me ... ," he started, but I interrupted him.
"No, John. I'm not a child anymore. You kept so many things from me, I'm simply mad at you!"
Taking a deep breath, I returned to the footpath and we kept walking in silence.
"How do you feel about Damon? Now that you know what he is?" he asked after a while.
I pondered on it. This afternoon at the pond, I would've admitted that I had fallen head over heels for him, but now? I didn't know anymore what to feel or to think.
"I don't know, John. It's a lot to take in right now," I replied.
He just smiled knowingly. "You've fallen for him, haven't you? You risked your life to protect him. That's something only lovers do."
I tried to process his words. In a way he was right. I had only thought about Damon and how to divert Henson's attention, but I would've done the same for John had he been in the same place. I shook my head.
"That's bullshit, John. I've known him only for three days." He kept walking and grinned.
"What?" I insisted.
We had almost reached my house. He turned around and held me by my shoulders, looking straight into my eyes.
"I'm not your dad, but I am a man with life experience, Helen. I see the way you look at him, and I see the way he looks at you. You two belong together, no matter how long you've known each other and regardless of the circumstances, believe me," he stated adamantly and left me a little nonplussed.
Finally, we had reached my threshold and I hugged him quickly.
"Thank you, John, for everything." He caressed my cheek with the back of is hand.
