"Between devil in the deep blue sea
I saw you dancing with a girl like me
I watched in silence as you held her hands
It's all down the river for a girl like me
For a girl like me"
Girl like me, by Ladyhawke
A few hours later, I went to the precinct with a stake in one coat pocket and a vial of vervain extract in the other. I went to reception and asked for John. Nervously, I waited in the lobby.
"Helen, are you alright?" he said and hugged me briefly. "You look tired," he said.
"I am. After your call, I couldn't really sleep anymore, John. Is she here already?" I asked.
He shook his head. "Not yet. Come," he said and led me into the small observation booth next to the interrogation room.
"You'll wait here until I call you, okay? Did you come prepared?"
I nodded and opened my coat so that he could see the stakes.
"Good girl," he praised with a grin.
I looked at the glass which separated the rooms. It seemed transparent on this side.
"I can hear and see you, but you can't see me, right?" He nodded.
"Right. I'll go back to the lobby now," he said and left me sitting alone in semi-darkness.
A few minutes later, the door of the interrogation room opened and John accompanied a dark-haired beauty into the room.
So this was Elena... She had long dark brown hair and a petite figure. She seemed to be the casual type, but I suspected that she would look just as stunning in a designer dress as she did now in her jeans. She sat down at John's request.
"Your name is Elena Gilbert, born in Mystic Falls, Virginia, on 22 June 1992 – is that right?" John said.
She looked at him, confused. "Yes, that 's all true, Mr. Mayor," she replied.
"You've died on 2 May 2010 in a car accident and woke up as a vampire."
She shot up from her chair. I held my breath.
"Liz said I could trust you, Mr. Mayor, that's the only reason you're still alive!" He smiled at her, unimpressed.
"Miss Gilbert, please sit down again. Liz was right. I just want an information from you."
He pointed to her chair and she sat down again. "Why should I help you?"
He shook his head. "Not me, but I hope you will help a certain young lady." He waved at me.
I walked over to the other room and knocked at the door.
"Come in," he called from the other side.
I took a deep breath and pushed the handle down. The door opened and I faced Elena Gilbert. She got up and looked at me. I held out my hand.
"Hello Elena, nice to meet you."
She was irritated. "Have we met before?"
I smiled. "No, we've never met." I went to the table and John pulled up a chair for me.
"Please sit down," I said.
"Who are you and what do you want from me?" she asked in consternation.
