She Got Away Vs. I Let Her Go
"Better luck next time, Spider."
——

"WHAAAAT?!"

Nike immediately pulled her phone away from her ear, holding it in arm's reach. If it weren't for her fast reflexes, her poor eardrum must have been suffering right now because of her best friend's loudness.

"I said I am being followed," she repeated in a hushed voice, loud enough for Kena to hear over the phone.

"I h-heard you, idiot! I just wanted to clarify!" Kena huffed indignantly. "Anyway, do you know those people? H-How many are they? Oh god, are you going to be kidnapped?!"

"Lower down your voice, Kena. You'll give me away," Nike calmly reprimanded her friend while absentmindedly going inside a boutique. After taking off her sunglasses, she immediately went to the farthest aisle and scanned the racks of clothes, trying to act as normal as possible. She didn't want her stalkers to know that she can sense them following her for a while now. If she isn't careful, she would be at a great disadvantage since she doesn't know anything about the people tailing her. She can't even determine how many are they and where are they exactly located.

She must be careful.

"S-Sorry," Kena immediately apologized, her voice soft and in whispers. "How are you so calm about this though? And why did you even have to tell me in the first place?!"

Nike chuckled. "I had to tell you, or else you'd nag me for suddenly hanging up on you, just in case."

"So, you prefer I have a heart attack instead of me nagging you?! Shame on you, Nike! Shame!"

"You're overreacting. This kind of thing happens to me all the time."

"Oh, well then I'm sorry Miss-this-kind-of-thing-happens-to-me-every-damn-time!!! Guess what? To me, this isn't normal! None of this is normal! You're not even normal. . ! And you know I always react like this, you ungrateful ingrate!"

Kena's overreacting comment sent Nike to laughter. She clutched her stomach while wiping away tears that gathered in the corners of her eyes. Some shoppers looked her way which she readily ignored and continued laughing heartily.

"Great. Now she's laughing," Kena remarked bitterly. "Do you hear me laughin' eh? Nay, right? Then what the heck are you laughing at?!"

"Nike. . ."

"Nike stop laughing you--! Ugh, I hate you!"

Nike then stopped laughing amid Kena's rants and smiled instead. "Kena. . ." she cooed.

"What?!"

"Thank you for caring for me."

There was a slight pause before Nike heard an almost inaudible sniff in the background. "Whatever. I'm hanging up."

Nike turned her phone off and placed it in her handbag. Still wearing the small smile on her face, she focused on the task at hand and fixed her mind set. She made a furtive scan in her surroundings just to check on her stalkers.

She can't feel their presence anymore.

Nike tsk-ed and scolded herself for being easily distracted. Now she was in a pinch. "Damn you Kena, you made me lose track of them. . ." she muttered with a sigh.

Without even a single information about her stalkers, Nike is practically blinded. Still, she remained calm and decided to shop while thinking of something. It would seem suspicious if she left without buying anything after all.
