Best friends were rather intricate things. No matter how much you understood one another, there'd always be times when both of you were wholly lost as to what the other was thinking. There'd be moments where you'd be doubting their sanity – which was what I was doing right now.
I was decked in a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie, having thrown it on in a scramble when Nolan had messaged me a few minutes ago to say that he was picking me up. Going out tonight was not in my plans and I solely wanted to curl up and sleep. Astrid called to say that I could come to her house with my overnight bag and I told her that I'd be there later. Nolan needed me first, for what? I did not know the answer to that.
We were stationed outside of a contemporary home yet neither of us made to move, my reason being that I didn't know where the hell we were. It was dark outside and we were outside of someone's house like a duo of scoundrels. "Why are we here, Nolan?" I finally raised a question, incapable of standing the silence anymore.
He gazed out of the window and to the house, green eyes becoming sad. His natural blonde roots were beginning to make an appearance and the look suited him. A touch of blonde mixed with raven curls. I brought up my hand and positioned it on his which laid on the steering wheel, letting him know that I would listen. "I wanted to see her."
My features loosened up as I listened to his thoughtful voice. There was no emotion in his words. It sounded like a confession - as if he was ashamed. I mentally paged through the notes in my head and stopped once I remembered a brown-haired girl taking a hold of his hand at the bonfire. "Sabrina," I whispered, feeling his hand clench underneath mine.
Nolan had been spending a lot of time with Sabrina as of late. The fact that she went to another school didn't stop him. After checking on me and my foot every day, he'd go and visit her. I hadn't met the girl properly yet, but she seemed good for him. I'd never seen Nolan so invested in a girl before and it was very heartwarming.
"I don't know what I'm doing," he declared in a strained voice. Lifting his free hand, he yanked at his hair, biting his lip in frustration. I tightened my hold on his hand, prompting him to get out what he was feeling. As fatigued as I was at that moment, I would always listen to Nolan. "I really like her, Charlie."
He sounded crestfallen and my heart ached for him. I knew exactly where it was coming from. Growing up, Nolan had slept over at my house more times than I could remember. When we reached age thirteen, those sleepovers became more routine. It was during that time when Nolan's parents hit a bump in their marriage. Everyone speculated that Leonora Bean had been cheating on Edward Bean for three years.
